Jacobs takes over ownership of the Greater Cleveland Aquarium; new exhibits announced

By Craig Webb Published: June 3, 2014

The Greater Cleveland Aquarium has a new owner – Jacobs Entertainment.

The ownership switch comes two years after New Zealand-based Marinescape NZ opened the aquarium in the Jacobs-owned Nautica complex in the Cleveland Flats.

The purchase expands Jacobs entertainment offerings in The Flats, including the Nautica Queen, Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica and Windows on the River.

“There is great potential in the aquarium and in the synergies available on the West Bank,” said Pat McKinley, executive vice president of Jacobs Investments in a statement. “We are excited to be part of the aquarium and are committed to its continued success.”

The aquarium has also announced the completion of “a major upgrade” to its Ohio Lakes & Rivers exhibit.

The renovation includes visitors walking through a forest with brooks and waterfalls. The exhibit depicts aquatic life found in Lake Erie and local rivers and includes interactive activities.

New reptile exhibits include salamanders, newts and snakes along with an expanded turtle area.

The aquarium is also now home to a Giant Pacific Octopus.

“We see oceans of possibilities for enhancing the guest’s experience,” said Tami Brown, general manager of the Greater Cleveland Aquarium in a statement. “From new marine life and interactive exhibits to a complete nautical visit at the FirstEnergy Powerhouse complex, there are now more ways to create the ultimate entertainment destination for families in Northeast Ohio and beyond.”
