Aeros slugger Jesus Aguilar hits game-winning HR and closes in on RBI title

By Stephanie Storm Published: August 16, 2013

Aeros 1B Jesus Aguliar picked up three more RBI on his quest to reach 100, with the trio coming in huge fashion via a game-winning three-run homer that handed the Aeros a 3-2 victory Friday at Canal Park.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Aeros had two men on and one out with their slugging clean up hitter at the plate to face new Reading reliever Mike Nesseth.

After working a 3-1 count against the right-hander who had just come on to face him, Aguilar connected on his 15th home run of season to give the Aeros their first and only lead of the night with one mighty swing of the bat.

In addition to being the hero of the game, Aguilar’s Double-A-leading RBI total rose to 94 on the season, just three away from tying the Aeros franchise record of 97 owned by 3B Wes Hodges (2008) and C Carlos Santana (’09).

With 17 games (including 10 at home) remaining this season, Aguilar has a good chance to become Akron’s first ever 100 RBI producer.

Before Aguilar’s big swing, the Phils touched Indians rehabbing pitcher Josh Tomlin for a run on two hits in the first inning and then scored an insurance run in the sixth inning against normally-scheduled starter Matt Packer

Tomlin, a 6-foot-1, 190-pounder, worked his scheduled four-inning rehab outing to start the game for the Aeros and emerged pleased with the results.

In his seventh overall rehab outing from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery and his second with the Aeros, Tomlin allowed the run in a 17-pitch first inning before setteling in and going on to hold the visitors scoreless over his next three innings.

With his 49 pitches (34 went for strikes), he did not issue a walk and struck out three batters.

Next up for the Aeros is Saturday’s second game of the three-game weekend series. RHP Toru Murato (5-5, 3.70 ERA) is slated to face Fightin Phils LHP Mario Hollands (3-1, 4.15 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park.
