Local baseball fans anxious to hear the results of the Aeros’ re-branding contest won’t have to wait as long as originally planned.
Instead of the originally-scheduled announcement coming on Oct. 6 with a big to-do at the Akron Civic Center, the team is expected to send out a press release Wednesday morning announcing whether the team will be changing names along with the winning entry.
During a portion of the recently-concluded season, fans where invited to submit names for the possible name change. The Aeros front office introduced these five name entries (in no particular order): keeping the original Aeros moniker or changing the name to the Vulcans, Gum Dippers, Rubber Ducks or Tire Jacks.
One of the five fans who were selected for submitting their entries will receive season tickets for life if their name is the one that wins the contest. The four runners up are in line to receive a pair of free tickets for the 2012 season.
The Indians Double-A team was originally given the Aeros nickname when it moved from Canton to Akron in 1997 as a nod to the city’s involvement in aeronautical advances. The other four possible names all center around Akron’s historical contributions in the tire/rubber industry.
