Akron Aeros defeat Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-4 Saturday

The Akron Aeros scored four runs in the second inning and three runs in the fourth inning Saturday to defeat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-4 at Canal Park.

Aeros starter Will Roberts outshined Flying Squirrels starter Craig Westcott in a battle of right-handed pitchers.

Jesus Aguilar singled, Carlos Moncrief walked and Tyler Holt singled to load the bases with no outs in the Aeros second inning. Giovanny Urshela popped out to first, but Jake Lowery followed with a single to right field that scored Aguilar and Moncrief. Matt Lawson scored Holt with a sacrifice fly and Francisco Lindor singled in Lowery.

Lowery tripled to right in the Aeros fourth inning and scored after a single to left by Lawson. Ronny Rodriguez singled to center to score Lawson and Cedric Hunter singled to right to score Rodriguez.

Roberts pitched 7 1/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed two earned runs and five hits, struck out four and walked one.

Westcott tossed four innings and allowed seven earned runs and 10 hits. He walked one and struck out none.

Richmond scored four runs in the eighth to cut its deficit to 7-4. Joe Panik singled in Jarrett Parker, Javier Herrera doubled in Skyler Stromsmoe and Panik and Andrew Susac singled in Herrera.

Aeros right-handed reliever Austin Adams pitched 2/3 innings and allowed two runs. Righty Joe Flores worked the ninth for a save. Flores struck out two of the three batters he faced.

-- A crowd of 5,689 watched Saturday’s game following a capacity crowd of 9,025 that witnessed Friday’s game, which featured Christmas in July uniforms worn by the Aeros.

“They were ugly, but hey, that is part of baseball,” Aeros manager Edwin Rodriguez said Saturday with a laugh. “This is a show. We are in the entertainment business.”
