The visiting Bowie Baysox topped the Aeros 4-3 Monday night at Canal Park, but needed 12 innings to put the game in the books after the host rallied for a pair of game-tying runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to extend the action.
The Aeros trailed 3-1 entering the ninth inning but rallied to tie the score with a walk and a hit batter followed by three consecutive two-out singles. Catcher Roberto Perez and shortstop Ronny Rodriguez each hit RBI singles that tied the game, 3-3.
But pinch runner Justin Toole was called out in a close play at the plate on third baseman Giovanny Urshela’s single to send the night’s action into extra innings.
The game remained knotted at three runs apiece until Bowie catcher Brian Ward smacked a solo home over the right field wall in the top of the 12th inning. Down to their final three outs in the bottom of the frame, the Aeros managed to get a runner to third base with a Tyler Holt triple, but he was left stranded as the surging Baysox won their sixth game in their last seven tries.
In his first start with the Aeros since returning from Triple-A Columbus, right-handed starter Toru Murata held the Baysox to two earned runs on five hits and struck out eight in seven innings.
The series continues Tuesday as the Aeros are scheduled to send right-hander Jordan Cooper (1-1, 4.26 ERA) to the mound to face Baysox right-hander Mike Wright (5-0, 3.70 ERA) at Canal Park at 7:05 p.m.
