Sneak peek at training plan for runners

By Paula Schleis Published: April 5, 2017

From time to time, I’ll have a blog entry aimed at a specific demographic within our training group.

Today, I need to talk to those of you who are

A) Walkers who want to begin running and are aiming to run the 8k on June 24 and,

B) Runners who want to aim for running the half marathon by the August 12 race.

We need to get both of you started on a very specific training regimen this weekend.

Akron Marathon Executive Director Anne Bitong will be on hand to introduce us to a 12-week 8k training program that presumes you've been walking for at least a couple of weeks, and a 19-week half-marathon schedule that presumes you can run two miles right now. She’ll be able to answer any questions before we hit the Firestone Park trail.

For the 8k runners, that’s a week short since Saturday marks 11 weeks before our race, so if you want to get started tonight and squeeze in a few of the missing days, here’s how it begins:

Day 1: Run for 10 minutes.

Day 2: Walk for 30 minutes.

Day 3: Run for 10 minutes.

I’ll bring copies of the training schedule for you. I started mine last week and I carry it in my purse so I can check it off each day. I love knowing exactly what I need to do to get me up to speed.

For those of you who can’t make it Saturday, I’ll wait till Sunday to post the guides here on the blog so I can also include any questions and answers that come up!
