Bombers Had No Terrorist Ties ?

By David King Published: April 24, 2013

From the Associated Press:

Authorities believe neither brother, both Russian-born ethnic Chechens, had links to terror groups...officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

No ties to terrorist groups ? That was quick. The investigation has barely begun.

I have to wonder, though, why authorities believe the bomber brothers have no ties to terrorist groups...despite the fact that the FBI was warned by Russia two years ago that the older bomber brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, had become radicalized. The Russians said Tamerlan engaged in "suspicious activities" while in the Caucusas region, which the Russians observed in the course of monitoring militant Islamic groups. The FBI interviewed the Tsarnaevs, but claimed it found no evidence of terrorist ties.

Um, okay, but wouldn't any of THIS be considered evidence of terrorist ties ?

Tamerlan Tsarnaev attended services at a radical mosque in Dagestan. That's how he came under the suspicion of the Russians. Here is some further information from the Russians:

the FBI said it had received information from an unidentified “foreign government” that Tsarnaev was “a follower of radical Islam and a strong believer, and that he had changed drastically since 2010 as he prepared … to join unspecified underground groups.”

No evidence of terrorist ties ?

And then there's this:

Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was an ardent reader of jihadist websites and extremist propaganda, U.S. officials said Tuesday, adding another piece to evidence they say suggests the two brothers were motivated by an anti-American, radical version of Islam.
And this:

Relatives and news reports have indicated that Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s descent into extremist Islam began around 2008 or 2009, when the ethnic Chechen met a convert identified only as “Misha,” began to become more devout, and sought out jihadist and conspiracy theorist websites, and the rabidly anti-Semitic propaganda tract, “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”

In 2009, he was quoted in a photo essay as saying, “I don’t have a single American friend, I don’t understand them,” adding that he believed Americans had lost their “values.”

His uncle Ruslan Tsarnaev said it was around that time his nephew gave up drinking and was devoting himself to “God’s business,” while Tamerlan’s mother, now wearing a hijab — an Islamic headscarf — began relating conspiracy theories about the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks to her cosmetology clients that she said her son had told her.

Maybe U.S. authorities should find out who "Misha" is before they speculate about the bomber brothers' lack of terrorist ties.

Are there really no ties to terrorist groups, or does the administration just want to believe there are no ties to terrorist groups ? At the very least, the eldest bomber brother was heavily influenced by radical Islam. U.S. authorities shouldn't have to discover him wearing Al Qaeda merit badges and a Bin Laden t-shirt to figure out the connection.
