This story is my favorite of the week.
Beware what you ask for, Democrats:
Veteran House Democratic aides are sick over the insurance prices they'll pay under Obamacare, and they're scrambling to find a cure.
"In a shock to the system, the older staff in my office (folks over 59) have now found out their personal health insurance costs (even with the government contribution) have gone up 3-4 times what they were paying before," Minh Ta, chief of staff to Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), wrote to fellow Democratic chiefs of staff in an email message obtained by POLITICO. "Simply unacceptable."
In the email, Ta noted that older congressional staffs may leave their jobs because of the change to their health insurance.
Under the Affordable Care Act, and federal regulations, may congressional staffers - designated as "official" aides - were forced to move out of the old heavily subsidized Federal Employees Health Benefits program and into the District of Columbia's health insurance marketplace exchange.
Aw, those poor little Democrats have to live under the same Obamacare system they created for the rest of us peons. Cry me a river.
I believe it was Sen. Chuck Grassley's (R-IA) amendment that forced these staffers onto the Obamacare exchanges. Kudos to him. At the time, Grassley said, “the more that Congress experiences the laws it passes, the better.” Amen to that a thousand times over. Grassley had intended for all of Congress to go on the Obamacare exchanges, but his amendment was watered down before it was written into law, and then this happened:
Democratic and Republican staffers alike were furious [over losing their luxurious taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits], warning that Congress faced a “brain drain” if the provision stuck [bullspit]. Under behind-the-scenes pressure from members of Congress in both parties, President Obama used the quiet of the August recess to personally order the Office of Personnel Management, which supervises federal employment issues, to interpret the law so as to retain the generous congressional benefits.
Thus, most Congress critters and their staffers, being the extra special super-human beings they are, got around the law they decided was just peachy keen for Mr. and Mrs. Average American. But a few of them fell through the cracks, ha ha. Expect those cracks to be filled with some Obama silly putty any day now. We sure can't have any Democratic staffers whining about the Obamacare law that they tout as the greatest thing since sliced bread. How unseemly.
Enter Sen. David Vitter (R-LA). He has demanded a floor vote on his bill to end the Obamacare healthcare exchange exemptions and special treatment Congress has received. Uh-oh. Cue the angry Democrats again:
Politico reported that several Democratic senators have asked staff to draft legislation that would deny federal health subsidies to anyone who votes for the Vitter plan, even if Vitter’s plan doesn’t become law. An even more spiteful draft bill would bar subsidies to any lawmaker or aide found by a congressional ethics committee to have “engaged in the solicitation of prostitution.”
Vindictive little sob's, aren't they ? If you recall, Vitter's phone number was found in the black book of the D.C. Madam prostitution ring a few years ago. The Dems are actually drafting legislation to single out Vitter and any allies he might have for persection. This is what happens when you threaten the special privileges of those extra special super-human beings in Congress.
Not that they are corrupt or anything. Heavens to betsy, NO. They are dedicated public servants, every one (cough).
Back to you, Chet.
