We don't have to listen to Republicans explain how Obama has failed as President. We can take the opposition party out of the equation almost completely, and just listen to Obama judge himself.
Senator Barack Obama, March 2006: “The fact that we are here today to debate raising America ‘s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America ‘s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that, “the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”
President Obama, February 2009: "I want to be very clear...We cannot, and will not, sustain deficits like these without end. Contrary to the prevailing wisdom in Washington these past few years, we cannot simply spend as we please and defer the consequences to the next budget, the next administration, or the next generation…We are paying the price for these deficits right now. In 2008 alone, we paid $250 billion in interest on our debt -- one in every 10 taxpayer dollars. That is more than three times what we spent on education that year; more than seven times what we spent on VA health care…And that's why today I'm pledging to cut the deficit we inherited in half by the end of my first term in office."
The Results: Obama has run up deficits far above a trillion dollars every single year of his presidency, and will again in 2012. He has accumulated more federal debt ($5.3 trillion and counting) than any President in American history in only three and a half years on the job. Obama has put forth no plan to balance the budget, and the joke of a budget plan he did produce, which added trillions upon trillions of new debt, couldn't even get one vote from a Democrat in Congress, let alone any Republican votes. The Senate-controlling Democrats haven't even put forth a budget during Obama's presidency. An epic failure of leadership, according to Obama's own standard.
RNC Director Reince Priebus: "In early 2009, the incoming administration offered detailed predictions of exactly what the stimulus would accomplish...Obama's economic advisers promised the stimulus would keep the unemployment rate below 8 percent. In 2012, the unemployment rate was supposed to fall below 6 percent."
The Results: The unemployment rate has never fallen below 8% at any time during Obama's presidency, and his net job creation record is still below zero. By now, Team Obama told us unemployment would be 5.7% if his megabucks stimulus plan was passed. Another epic failure, according to Obama's own standards.
President Obama, September 2009: "Now, add it all up, and the [ObamaCare] plan I'm proposing will cost around $900 billion over 10 years -- less than we have spent on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and less than the tax cuts for the wealthiest few Americans that Congress passed at the beginning of the previous administration."
The Results, via the Congressional Budget Office and Yahoo News: "President Obama's landmark healthcare overhaul is projected to cost $1.76 trillion over a decade, reports the CBO, a hefty sum more than the $940 billion estimated when the healthcare legislation was signed into law. To put it mildly, ObamaCare's projected net worth is far off from its original estimate -- in fact, about $820 billion off."
Obama used political smoke and mirrors to vastly underplay the true costs of ObamaCare, thereby misleading the American people in the process. We should expect far better of our leader. Another epic fail for Obama.
From ABC News: Three years ago today, a freshly-inaugurated President Obama said of his plan to fix the financial crisis that “if I don’t have this done in three years, then there’s going to be a one-term proposition.”
The Resutls: It sure ain't fixed. Government dependency has grown by leaps and bounds. Food stamps are at record levels. Our workforce participation rate is lower than at any time since the Great Depression. Economic recovery has not occurred, and the economy is still weak. We're living on borrowed money. We're increasing the number of people going on disability faster than we're creating jobs. Wages have dropped, prices have increased, Treasuries have been downgraded, and this President has produced NO PLAN to right our fiscal ship. No wonder all he can do is campaign by making up lies about his opponent. Anything to keep the focus off of his own performance.
Enough is enough. Let's hold Obama the storyteller to his own standard and make him a one-term President.
Update 3:00pm - The actual ten year costs of ObamaCare once fully implemented (from 2014-2023) are projected to be even higher, at $2.6 trillion, nearly three times what we were told by the Obamanauts in 2009-2010.
