Use these tips to maneuver through construction on Arlington Road

By jim Published: August 2, 2011

GREEN: Visitors staying at area hotels for the Bridgestone Invitational World Golf Championships starting Wednesday at Firestone Country Club, or for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival in Canton that runs through Aug. 9, might experience frustrating traffic slowdowns during the widening of South Arlington Road.

An $11.7 million two-year project, scheduled to be completed this fall, is rebuilding Arlington from Interstate 77 south through the intersection of state Route 619 (East Turkeyfoot Lake Road).

Early this week, workers from Wenger Excavating Inc. of Dalton will be resurfacing the center lane from I-77 to Arlington Ridge Drive during overnight hours.

Motorists staying at hotels on Arlington Ridge Drive will be able to make a right turn out of the hotel parking lots and stay in the right lane until they reach the interstate, said Valerie Wolford, communications director for the city of Green.

The original contract for the project calls for the contractor to avoid blocking lanes that are not under construction during the time of the golf tournament and the HOF festival.

“Our goal has always been to make navigating the construction area as easy as possible for motorists,” Green Mayor Dick Norton said. “And this upcoming week will be no exception.”

The city has erected temporary signs indicating entrances to businesses that are located throughout the Arlington Road corridor to help motorists.

To avoid construction, visitors staying at hotels located on Interstate Parkway or Fortuna Drive can drive south on Fortuna to state Route 619, turn left [east] and then turn right onto Massillon Road to reach I-77.

The contractor anticipates moving the construction to the east side by the second week of August, Wolford said.

‘‘Once this happens, Arlington will have four lanes of traffic open [two in each direction] as opposed to currently there is one lane in each direction and a center turn lane,’’ she said.
