By Michael Beaven Published: July 31, 2014

Australian Marc Leishman strives to take a basic approach every time he tees up for a golf tournament.

Leishman twice referenced the need to “keep doing the simple things well” when he met with the media Thursday following his first round score of 6-under-par 64 to lead the field of 76 golfers in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club.

Leishman started on No. 10 with a birdie on a sunny and warm day on the South Course. He added birdies on 13, 16, 17, 2, 4, 6 and 8. He made a bogey on 18 and 7.

“To start with, I drove the ball well,” Leishman said. “It makes this course a lot easier when you’re on the fairway. It’s pretty tough when you’re playing from the rough.

David Feherty of CBS on golf's next wave of stars, Jim Furyk

By Marla Ridenour Published: July 30, 2014

With a brutal stretch that includes the Bridgestone Invitational, the PGA Championship, the four-event FedExCup playoffs that start on Aug. 21 at The Barclays and the Ryder Cup, David Feherty of CBS may be as anxious as golf fans to see who emerges.

“It’s a very interesting time in golf. When Tiger was so far in front for so long, there was almost a lack of interest in anybody else, he was so spectacular,” Feherty said Wednesday in a telephone interview from his home in Dallas. “Now I think people are starting to realize how good this crop of youngsters is. It’s the first wave of kids who grew up with Tiger Woods as their hero. Every time I see one of these shots that Rory hits or Jordan Speith, I thank God I gave up when I did.”

Feherty also mentioned Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, Billy Horschel and Harris English, whom he said “looks like a young Tom Weiskopf. I think he’s going to be a superstar.”

"There are so many of them. Majors and big tournaments like the Bridgestone are so much more difficult to win than they used to be because the strength and the depth is there,” Feherty said. “Now anybody who plays in this tournament is capable of winning it. Heck, there are people who haven’t qualified who are capable of winning it and that wasn’t always the case.”
