Surprise! Ohio State's defense comes alive

By Sheldon Ocker Published: October 27, 2013

COLUMBUS: Until Saturday night, the defense had done little more than go along for the ride in the Buckeyes’ undefeated season, not unlike a biker chick holding on for dear life to her guy’s tattoos, as he pilots a Harley through a mountain pass at 80 miles per hour.

Even the diehards in Buckeye Nation were beginning to understand that a chance to play for a national championship was passing Ohio State by, not only because of a weak schedule -- in and out of the Big Ten conference -- but because of a porous defense that had allowed 20 points a game before the 63-14 beating the Buckeyes put on Penn State in Ohio Stadium.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.: Getting caught up in the pregame hype surrounding Saturday's game at No. 4 Ohio State is one catch Penn State receiver Allen Robinson would prefer not to make.

"I'd say it's one of the bigger games I've played in, but I try not to think too much about that," Robinson said. "I take each practice day and get better and prepare for this game like any other game."

COLUMBUS: Ohio State coach Urban Meyer encounters the question, he says, as much as 200 times a year from recruits, fans and reporters: Why haven't you ever had a running back rush for 1,000 yards?

No. 4 Ohio State aims to extend streak vs Northwestern

Maine Northwestern Fo_Kada

EVANSTON, Ill.: No. 4 Ohio State visits No. 16 Northwestern on Saturday night in a game that features one team looking to extend the nation's longest active win streak and another seeking that signature victory.

What better way to do it than with a prime-time audience watching?

"It's why we come to Ohio State," Ohio State defensive lineman Michael Bennett said. "Big games, night games are awesome. We play really well on the road. I don't how many places can say they have back-to-back night games which are huge games."

The Buckeyes (5-0, 1-0 Big) have won 17 straight since dropping four in a row to close out the 2011 season and are eyeing a national championship after going undefeated in coach Urban Meyer's first year. However, they were banned from a bowl game in 2012 because of NCAA sanctions stemming from the tattoo scandal.

Now they're coming off a 31-24 win over Wisconsin, and they're staring at another big hurdle, a team that wants to show it can beat the best in the Big Ten.

Buckeyes unapologetic for hanging on in 4th

By RUSTY MILLER, AP Sports Writer Published: October 3, 2013

COLUMBUS: What's brewing with the 2013 Ohio State Buckeyes ...

BUCKEYES BUZZ: After building a 17-point lead heading into the fourth quarter against Wisconsin, Ohio State all but shut down its offense last week.

Buckeyes fans were happy with the win, but felt that sitting back and relying on the defense and punter to hang on to a lead smacked of a return to the Tresselball era.

For what it's worth, the current coaches are aware of that complaint.

"Would we have liked to convert maybe a few more third-downs and keep drives alive? Absolutely," said QBs coach and co-offensive coordinator Tom Herman. "When you've got a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter, the way you approach how you're going to call the game changes significantly. Do the fans want to see everything they saw in the first quarter in the fourth quarter? Absolutely. Good for them. But it's not going to happen. It's just not. We don't have the responsibility to put up X number of points or X number of yards, but we do have a responsibility to win the game."
