Three Buckeyes taken in NFL Draft, several others sign as UDFAs

By Dan Kadar Published: April 30, 2013

Ohio State had just three football players taken in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins was the first Buckeye drafted. He was taken in the second round by the New York Giants with the 49th pick.

Defensive leader John Simon was taken in the fourth round by the Baltimore Ravens with the 129th pick. Right tackle Reid Fragel was the final Buckeye picked on Saturday going 240th overall to the Cincinnati Bengals.

That's the fewest number of Buckeyes taken in the draft since three were picked in 2008. Last four Buckeyes, led by offensive tackle Mike Adams, were drafted.

Several other Ohio State players landed on teams as undrafted free agents. Most notably, fullback Zach Boren, cornerback Travis Howard and safety Orhian Johnson all signed with the Houston Texans. Tight end Jake Stoneburner was picked up by the Green Bay Packers. Linebacker Etienne Sabino signed on with the New York Giants and defensive end Nathan Williams was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings.

Ohio State's offense a strength this time around

COLUMBUS: Say this much for Urban Meyer: He doesn't mind putting pressure on himself, his Ohio State staff or his players.

"I would be disappointed if we're not the best offense in the Big Ten," Meyer said Saturday after the Buckeyes' annual spring intrasquad scrimmage.

What a difference a year makes when it comes to Ohio State's attack. It was early last spring when Meyer, in his first year as head coach of the Buckeyes, famously called the formative first steps of the players adapting to his no-huddle, spread attack as "a clown show."

Meyer saved a lot of his vitriol then for a group of wide receivers who he said didn't work hard enough, weren't serious about learning plays and didn't come prepared to get better.

No wonder receivers coach Zach Smith had a lot of sleepless nights.

Brutus Buckeye crushed during spring practice

By Dan Kadar Published: April 9, 2013

Generally, mascots and their lifeless, smiling faces are terrifying. So when one happens to get leveled, it's quite the event.

When Brutus Buckeye was creamed during spring practice, it became newsworthy (hey, it's April, what do you want?). So much so that it landed on SportsCenter. If you haven't seen it, here's the clip from the gang at Eleven Warriors.
