By Dan Kadar Published: August 27, 2014

Ohio State's first depth chart of the season has something of a surprise.

Senior Michael Bennett and junior Tommy Schutt are both listed as starters at defensive tackle next to Adolphus Washington for Saturday's game against Navy. Bennett has played in 34 games for the Buckeyes and started 13 last season. He's also Ohio State's current leader in sacks with 11.

Cam Burrows and Vonn Bell are listed as co-starters at safety and Gareon Conley and Eli Apple are listed as starters at cornerback opposite Doran Grant.

There is also a three-player tie at running back with Ezekiel Elliott, Rod Smith and Curtis Samuel. There's also no consensus at left guard (Billy Price and Joel Hale) and center (Jacoby Boren and Chad Lindsay).

Here is the full release from Ohio State on injured senior quarterback Braxton Miller.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State senior quarterback Braxton Miller re-injured his right shoulder attempting a short pass in practice Monday and will miss the 2014 football season. This latest injury will require surgery.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Braxton and his family," Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer said. "This is an unfortunate injury to a young man who means so much to this program and to Buckeye nation."

"I love Ohio State and Buckeye nation, and my goal is to come back from this injury stronger and better than ever," Miller said. "I am on course to graduate in December and I want to attend graduate school, and then return to lead the Buckeyes next season. In the meantime, I want to give all the support I can to my coaches and teammates as they chase a championship this season."

Ohio State likely to replace Braxton Miller with freshman J.T. Barrett

By Dan Kadar Published: August 19, 2014

With quarterback Braxton Miller out for the season, Ohio State will likely turn to redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett to be its starter.

The team recently named Barrett the second-string quarterback, overtaking redshirt sophomore Cardale Jones.

"The offense moves better when (Barrett is) in there," offensive coordinator Tom Herman told reporters on Saturday. "And you can throw all the completion percentages and everything else in there, too. He's completing more balls and making more of the right reads in the passing game and more of the right reads in the running game. But at the end of the day, the offense moves better when he's in."

Coming out of Rider High School in Texas, Barrett was rated as the nation's third-best dual-threat quarterback by recruiting website 247Sports and a four-star prospect.

Buckeyes blow up secondary and completely rebuild

By By Rusty Miller / AP Sports Writer Published: August 18, 2014

COLUMBUS: Urban Meyer wasn’t just unhappy with his pass defense after last season.

So upset was he that he destroyed it, hired a new coach to oversee what was left and then they rebuilt it from the ground up.

“It’s an acknowledgment of things not done well,” veteran safeties coach Kerry Coombs said.

As a result, there are a lot of people keeping a close watch on the defensive backfield in particular as No. 5 Ohio State goes through its paces in preparation for the Aug. 30 opener against Navy in Baltimore.
