What kind of cars do the candidates drive?

By Steven S. Brooks Published: October 22, 2008

In my never-ending quest to find a single reason to vote for either one of the two major presidential candidates, I thought I would check out what kind of cars each owned. Not surprisingly, I immediately found an article on this subject that was printed in Newsweek in September. Like everything else in this election, it's pretty interesting but in the end, far from inspiring.

It turns out that the Obama family only has one car, a recently acquired Ford Escape Hybrid. Since the vehicle they traded in was a hemi-powered Chrysler 300C, I'm assuming the acquisition of the more eco-friendly Ford in place of the powerful and stylish Chrysler (a favorite of customizers and rap stars) was purely a political decision.

I was really excited to learn that the McCain family has thirteen cars. Wow; we could conceivably have a president who's a car guy! Up to this point, I thought only foreign despots were allowed to have great taste in cars (and women, but that's a different blog). Then I saw the list. A 2004 Cadillac CTS, a 2001 Honda sedan, a 2001 GMC SUV , a 2000 Lincoln, a 2008 Jeep, a 2007 Ford pickup and Mrs. McCain's Lexus with license plates that read MS BUD. OK, there are also three electric GEM's (glorified golf carts) and a 1960 Jeep at his ranch but, overall, boring transportation vehicles.

So, Obama gets a point for good taste in buying the 300C but loses a point for selling out with the Escape. McCain gets a point for the vintage Jeep but loses same for wasting tons of cash on that pile of automotive dreck. I wonder if I can find out if either one changes (and recycles, of course) their own oil before November 4....
