Browns coach Mike Pettine says Johnny Manziel likely out for rest of preseason

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 27, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine said quarterback Johnny Manziel will definitely be sidelined Saturday night in the third exhibition game at Tampa Bay, and he'll also likely sit out the preseason finale at Chicago because of his sore right elbow.

"Given the short week and not wanting to put him out there against Chicago, I could see he'll just be down for the next two [preseason games]," Pettine said Thursday after practice.

Pettine also essentially named projected starting quarterback Josh McCown the starter for the Sept. 13 regular-season opener against the New York Jets. Pettine has called McCown "firmly" the No. 1 quarterback throughout the summer.

"Is there a league rule I have to name a starter Week 1? Not today," Pettine said. "When the league says I have to name a starter, I'll name a starter. No, I think I've said he's the starter without saying it."

Browns D-lineman Phil Taylor sits out, QB Johnny Manziel continues to rest throwing arm

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 27, 2015

Browns defensive lineman Phil Taylor sat out and quarterback Johnny Manziel continued to rest his throwing arm Thursday during the half-hour period of practice open to the media.

Taylor was sidelined for the first two preseason games and limited throughout training camp as he attempts to bounce back after undergoing two surgeries last year on his right knee.

It's not known why Taylor didn't participate in the open period Thursday. He rode a stationary bike and worked out on the side along with cornerbacks K'Waun Williams (abdominal), Justin Gilbert (hip flexor) and Robert Nelson (hamstring), offensive tackle Michael Bowie (shoulder) and nose tackle Ishmaa'ily Kitchen (groin).

Manziel has been resting his right arm since Sunday because of elbow soreness. The Browns signed journeyman quarterback Pat Devlin on Thursday morning to provide depth at the position while Manziel is shut down. Devlin practiced Thursday.

Browns sign quarterback Pat Devlin, waive backup center Ryan Seymour

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 27, 2015

The Browns signed journeyman quarterback Pat Devlin and waived backup center Ryan Seymour on Thursday.

Devlin will provide depth at quarterback while backup Johnny Manziel rests his sore right elbow.

On Wednesday afternoon, coach Mike Pettine said Manziel will likely sit out the third preseason game Saturday night at Tampa Bay, leaving projected starter Josh McCown and third-stringer Thad Lewis to handle the quarterback duties against the Buccaneers.

Pettine said the Browns probably wouldn't summon a new quarterback for action in Tampa if they were to sign one this week, but he would be more likely to play in the exhibition finale Sept. 3 at Chicago. In other words, Devlin probably won't play until the last preseason game against the Bears.

Here's what Browns coach Mike Pettine is saying after practice

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 26, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine met with reporters Wednesday after practice. Below is a transcript provided by the team.

On QB Johnny Manziel’s status: “He is experiencing a little bit of soreness. It hasn’t bounced all the way back. He didn’t throw today. We are going to err on the side of caution. We will probably make a decision later today, meet with (head athletic trainer) Joe (Sheehan) and the (doctors) and get a feel for what is the next course of action at this point. Do we shut him down for the rest of the week? We will make that decision later today whether to add an extra arm. Those are all things after this I am going to head up and hash through that.”

On if Manziel went for an MRI: “He did. We didn’t think there was anything structural. This is something he has been dealing with since high school. We just wanted to confirm that there was nothing structural, and that is the case. The MRI was a positive result.”

On if this has been an issue for Manziel and if the soreness goes away with just rest: “Yes, it does. It hasn’t come back as quickly as we had hoped. Just to be cautious, we didn’t want to rush him back for a preseason game and then have it be something that is chronic throughout the season. We just felt we should be cautious with it. We will go through all those options this afternoon.”

Browns coach Mike Pettine said backup quarterback Johnny Manziel likely won't play Saturday in the third preseason game at Tampa Bay because of a sore right elbow.

"Could he play [Saturday] if he had to?" Pettine said Wednesday. "More than likely he could. But why do that in the preseason?"

Manziel didn't throw during Wednesday's practice. He has been resting his arm since he felt the elbow flare up during Sunday's session. He also didn't throw Aug. 11 because the elbow bothered him then, but he played in the preseason opener two days later.

On this week's podcast, we look ahead to the Browns' third preseason game. The team plays the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night and we might be seeing a few players in a Browns uniform for the first time. Among them is veteran wide receiver Dwayne Bowe. We may also see rookie running back Duke Johnson for the first time, but are the coaches expecting too much from the third-round pick?

Wide receiver Terrelle Pryor's in-game debut could happen on Saturday as well. If Pryor doesn't play, will he risk not making the team? We close this week's show with the injury to quarterback Johnny Manziel. Should the Browns be concerned going forward?
