Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “As you saw Colt (McCoy) wasn’t out here today.  Tony Pashos and Jordan Norwood, those three guys will be out this week.  Those three guys will miss this game.  Obviously, Seneca (Wallace) will be the starter and barring anything that changes, Thad Lewis then will be the backup so that’s where we’re at at quarterback.  At tackle, with Tony being out, it looks like we’ll have the three guys that have been playing.  Artis Hicks will start, then you’ve got Oniel Cousins and, of course, you’ve got (John) Greco.  Those three guys will cover that spot probably with Artis starting.”

(On his thoughts on being the defensive coordinator for the Browns next season)- “I would love to do this again.  I obviously would like to win a lot more games.  To be in the National Football League is an unbelievable honor and a treat.  I’ve been at a lot of franchises, they were all outstanding.  I think we talked earlier in the year about the traditional franchises.  I’ve been at a number of them and I really like it.  I like the old rivalries, I like the history.  I really enjoy it and it’s obviously a great place to work.”

By Nate Ulrich Published: December 28, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “A couple comments about some of the things that have happened, as you saw in the release, Josh Cribbs was nominated by the Browns for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his excellence one the field  and in the community.  We all know what he means to the community, we all know what he can do on the field and we’re proud to make him our nominee.  We can talk in length as to what Josh has done for this organization.  Also, I’d like to congratulate Joe Thomas who was selected as the starter in the Pro Bowl along with D’Qwell (Jackson) who was chosen as an alternate as well as Josh Cribbs, who was chosen as an alternate.  That’s a high honor to be recognized by the coaches and the players in the league as well as the fans so my congratulations go to them. They’ve done a nice job.  In terms of injuries, Colt McCoy has not been medically cleared to play yet. When he is, at that time we’ll talk about his availability for Sunday and his role.  At this point there’s nothing more to say.  Jordan Norwood is the same, he hasn’t been cleared to play.  Tony Pashos will miss practice today, he was sick yesterday, we anticipate he’ll be back tomorrow. We hope to have Quinton Spears back tomorrow at practice as well and then the others guys that you may have questions about are limited and will be in-and-out of practice today so that’s what I have.  Preparation this far has been good, good walk-through and then we’ll get ready to go out and practice and get ready for the Steelers.”

Transcript from news conference with Browns coach Pat Shurmur

By Nate Ulrich Published: December 20, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “I don’t know if you’re all aware of this yet, but we had to make a couple of roster moves.  Titus Brown and Alex Smith, we put them on IR.  They had season ending injuries and then we elevated Brian Smith from the practice squad and we signed Dan Gronkowski, a tight end, to replace Alex.  We have two other practice squad players.  We added Torrey Grissett and then Craig Robertson, a wide receiver and a linebacker.  Those are the roster moves.  Today’s practice, there’ll be guys in-and-out, but nothing really new to add to anything.  Joe Haden is a little bit sore today with a thigh contusion so he’ll be somewhat limited, maybe not do much today. Being it’s a short turnaround from Sunday’s game, there’ll be some guys that won’t be able to compete as much as you’d like if this were truly a Wednesday. I’ll answer any specific questions there.  Otherwise, preparation for Baltimore, the last game is fresh in my mind, it just happened a couple weeks ago. I told the players we had an opportunity to be 10-7 late in the third quarter and it ended up being 10-3 and quickly changed from there.  We need to do what we can to put together a good plan to go in there and try to get a victory as we move forward here through the last couple weeks.”

Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(On if they tried to pressure Ben Roethlisberger more after he returned)- “We blitzed.  I don’t have the exact numbers, but probably as much as we blitzed in the first half.  We’re not an overwhelmingly blitzing defense as it is, but we did.  First of all, he’s not a runner. He can run, he’s capable of running, but he doesn’t run a lot.  He’s very good in the pocket.  I didn’t think he was going to be that less mobile or that less evasive.  He can sidestep and he’s got great strength, shrugs off tacklers.  When he was out there playing, I didn’t think there was going to be a whole lot of difference.  If he had to run I don’t think he could’ve made a lot of yards down the field.  That would’ve been the difference.”

He was a little bit sore so I’m going to have to back him off.  Then, Josh Cribbs will be out and be a little bit limited.  Artis Hicks is a little bit sore from practice yesterday, his shoulder. He’ll be fine, he’ll be out there.  That’s what I have.   I’m sure you’ve got some questions.  It’s just a Thursday preparation for the Arizona Cardinals.  We kind of covered it yesterday, I think they’re a very talented team that’s playing well and they’ve found a way to win some games here in the last few weeks. They’re playing with some confidence so it will be a challenge.”

Transcript from news conference with Browns President Mike Holmgren

By Nate Ulrich Published: December 14, 2011

Browns President Mike Holmgren met with reporters today to discuss the team's handling of quarterback Colt McCoy's concussion. McCoy suffered a concussion this past Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. McCoy re-entered the game and finished it after missing only two plays. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “Good morning everybody.  I know you’re disappointed Pat’s (Shurmur) not here so I am pinch hitting.  I thought it was necessary today to kind of set the record straight as I can about some of the things that have been happening the last few days. He will catch up with you after practice regarding football stuff.  The purpose of this meeting and why I’m here is that the last couple of days we’ve met here with the NFL as well as the union, doctors and so on to get some sort of closure, hopefully, on the incident that took play with Colt (McCoy) in the game against the Steelers.  As I said, there’s a lot of speculation, there’s a lot of things that have been written and said and the reason that we’ve waited as an organization to have this meeting is that we had to have those other meetings before so I wouldn’t say something and then I’d have to come back and change it.  Now, we’ve had those meetings so now here it is. I also want to comment that on the schedule and how we have these, it’s going to be our decision.  It’s not going to be your decision, okay.  I believe we’re doing this correctly, I think I can clear up anything you might have on your mind regarding this situation and that’s the reason. Having said that, now I’ll open it up to questions.”

Representatives of the NFL and the NFL Players Association are meeting with the Browns today to discuss the way the team handled quarterback Colt McCoy after he suffered a concussion as a result of a helmet-to-facemask hit he absorbed from Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison on Thursday night at Heinz Field. After taking the blow, McCoy sat out two plays before re-entering the game late in the fourth quarter.

In an e-mail response sent today to the Beacon Journal, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote, "The purpose of the meeting is to examine procedures and identify areas for further discussion with other medical experts, Commissioner [Roger] Goodell and the union. Any changes in policy or procedures would be made by the commissioner in conjunction with our Head, Neck and Spine medical committee and the NFLPA."

(Opening statement) - “Got the guys going today, got a good practice, got a chance to run around after couple days off their feet.  As we get ready for Arizona, it’s a little bit of a longer preparation week so it was good for them. They’ll be off tomorrow – typical off day – and back to work on Wednesday, against an Arizona team that’s playing well. So we’ve got some work to do to get ready for them.”

Report: NFL determines Browns did not test QB Colt McCoy for concussion until after game

By Nate Ulrich Published: December 11, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur insisted the team's medical staff followed protocol when clearing quarterback Colt McCoy to re-enter the game Thursday night after he was hit in the facemask by the helmet of Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison.

However, an initial review by the NFL determined the Browns did not administer the standard SCAT2 concussion test on McCoy until Friday morning, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported today on "Sunday NFL Countdown." Citing unnamed sources, Mortensen also reported McCoy's situation likely will be the catalyst to assigning an independent neurologist to each NFL game in the future.

Transcript from news conference with Browns coach Pat Shurmur

By Nate Ulrich Published: December 9, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “I’ll start out with the injuries.  Josh Cribbs left the game with a groin strain. He had good strength today, but he’ll be reevaluated on Monday.  Owen Marecic left the game with a concussion. He’s being evaluated and we’ll follow the protocol there.  Ben Watson left the game also with a concussion.  He mentioned the symptoms so we’re going through that process with him.  Colt McCoy, postgame he began to exhibit symptoms of a concussion so we’re evaluating him as we speak.  I’m sure you’ll have questions about that and I’ll be happy to answer them.  In terms of Shawn Lauvao, he had an ankle sprain and Tony Pashos, a sore left ankle. The rest of the guys made it through alright.  It was a tough AFC North game, a very physical game and we came out on the short end of it. The guys played extremely hard, it was a tough fought game. I’m proud of everybody’s effort and we just have to find a way to come out on the winning end the next time we play them.”

Transcript from news conference with Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron

By Nate Ulrich Published: December 6, 2011

Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(On what the biggest issue was against the Ravens)- “Clearly, we didn’t play the run nearly how we wanted to play it.  We took turns messing up, including me.  I didn’t put them in the best defenses sometimes.  We got out of our gaps.  You’ve got to tip your hat to them.  They’re good, we knew they were very good coming in that they were a very talented team with an exceptional runner.  We expected to do a lot better than that.  If there was anything good that occurred, it was that we kept them out of the end zone for the most part and had a chance to keep the game close.  But, it wasn’t what we wanted.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “There’s nothing new on the injury front.  T.J. Ward and Quinton Spears are the only two guys that won’t participate in practice today.  One announcement that I think has been released is D’Qwell Jackson is this year’s recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award. There’s nobody more deserving of any award than D’Qwell.  I’ve gained a strong appreciation for what he is as a player, as a man, as a professional.  He’s the full package in my opinion and his production has been great.  What he means to the team behind the scenes is outstanding and he could be the recipient of a lot of awards in my mind just because I think the world of him so that is this year’s recipient.  With that, we’re getting ready for the Steelers.  Today is really our full day of practice as we prepare and then we’ll have our walk-through tomorrow and go down to Pittsburgh and play the game.”
