2014 NFL Draft: Transcript of first-round pick Justin Gilbert's conference call with reporters

By Ryan Lewis Published: May 9, 2014

The Browns selected Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert with the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Gilbert spoke with reporters via conference call following the selection.

Below is a transcript:

On being drafted by Cleveland and playing with Joe Haden:

“It’s a dream come true. I became friends with him not too long ago, and he’s a great guy to be around. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from him.”

On if he felt that the Browns were targeting him throughout the draft process:

“Not at all (laughter). They kind of crept up on me. I had a meeting with them the day before I came to New York, and that kind of gave it away, that they wanted to get me so it was something I was thinking about on my way up here.”

On what kind of cornerback the Browns are getting in him:

“An every-down cornerback that can guard big receivers and small receivers. I can pretty much do it all, a guy create turnovers and get the ball back to our offense a lot. Just an all-around cornerback.”

On his ball-hawking skills and ability to make interceptions:

“It’s something that you can’t really coach. I think you have to be born with it, and I think I was born with that ability to make plays on the ball. For some people, they can work on it and get a little bit better, but I think I just have that natural thing about me where I can go and take the ball out of the air.”

On critics saying he’s not a great tackler:

“I’ve heard that before. It’s something that doesn’t bother me at all. I think I’ve only missed like two tackles this year. I think they’re paying more attention to block shedding. It’s something that doesn’t bother me at all because I know I can tackle.”

On if he considers himself the best corner in the draft, and if he thought he was a top-ten pick entering the draft:

“Yes, I did. I just didn’t know exactly which team I was going to end up with. I thought highly of myself.”

On joining the Brown s, considering the team’s record in recent seasons :

“I think we’re going to turn it around. It starts with the defense, and I think we made the right decision taking me. We’re going to continue to build and just work for it, and it’s going to turn around in a couple of years. I’m looking forward to it.”

On if he would describe himself as a physical, press corner:

“Yes, I think so. I think I fit in well. That’s something I’ve been doing since I came to Oklahoma State, pressuring man-to-man and being able to roll receivers down the field, and adding to that, taking the ball out of the air.”

On potential concerns of being compared to QB Johnny Manziel, considering Manziel was still on the board:

“Not at all. It’s something I’m not worried about. We play two different positions and you can get something out of me that he can’t give you. I think they made the right decision getting me.”
