49ers QB Alex Smith headed to Kansas City
San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Alex Smith will be traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, FOX’s Jay Glazer reported.
The deal won’t be official until the March 12 opening of the NFL calendar year, Glazer said.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs will give up a second-round pick, the second overall, in this year’s draft and a conditional mid-rounder in 2014.
Smith was considered a possible option for the Browns, who are looking for competition for incumbent starter Brandon Weeden. Schefter said the Chiefs are expected to release Matt Cassel, another veteran quarterback whom the Browns could consider.
Smith lost his job to Colin Kapernick after suffering a concussion on Nov. 11. An impending Smith trade was first reported Sunday by Jason La Canfora of CBS.
