The Browns claimed undrafted rookie running back Glenn Winston off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers, a league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal.

The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the Browns have yet to announce the move. NFL Network first reported the news.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Winston impressed this preseason. He had 19 carries for 113 yards (5.9 average) and a touchdown.

But Winston, 25, also has a checkered past. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, he served jail terms of four and six months after he was arrested twice for physical assault during his two-season career at Michigan State, and he was dismissed from the program in November 2009.

Winston finished his collegiate career at Division II Northwood University in Midland, Mich. Last season, he rushed for 717 yards and nine touchdowns in eight games.

The Browns also have reportedly claimed receiver LaRon Byrd and offensive linemen Ryan Seymour and Caylin Hauptmann off waivers.
