Browns Family Day blog: Highlights from the team’s scrimmage at the University of Akron

The Browns scrimmage at the University of Akron started early at 11:13. The first play of the scrimmage was a play face and a “sack” against Hoyer by safety Donte Whitner. On the second play, Hoyer threw an 11-yard out pass to wide receiver Miles Austin.

Austin has been a popular target for Hoyer. He just caught a 19-yard pass up the middle.

Rookie Isaiah Crowell is in the game at running back against the second team defense. He's had two consecutive short carries. Hoyer missed on a pass to tight end Jordan Cameron, forcing a punt. The second team offense takes the field with 9:50 left in the first quarter.

Rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel is now on the field. On a roll out to his left, Manziel threw the ball away into the sidelines.

The first score of the game came on a 42-yard field gal by kicker Billy Cundiff. Hoyer is back in the game, tossing to running back Ben Tate for a one-yard gain.

Hoyer floated a third down pass incomplete intended for wide receiver Anthony Armstrong. Cornerback Joe Haden was on the coverage breaking up the pass.

Manziel took the field for his second drive at the 30-yard line. It started with a one-yard run by rookie Terrance West.

In front of Manziel on the offensive line was Paul McQuistan, Alex Parsons, Jeremiah Warren, John Greco and Reid Fragel. On a pitch, West ran the ball for 14 yards, the team’s biggest running play of the game thus far. Manziel followed it up by a nine-yard read option run.

Running a pay out of the pistol formation, Manziel handed off to fullback Ray Agnew for a one-yard gain. On second and nine, Manzel handed off to running back Chris Ogbonnaya for a five-yard run. Ogbonnaya got another carry on third down for no gain. On fourth, with Manziel in the shotgun, he threw to the left to rookie Willie Snead for his first completion. It was for 15 yards.

On first down, Manziel lined up in the shotgun and pitched to running back Dion Lewis for a four-yard run to the left. On second and six, Manziel lined up under center, Manziel faked a hand off, rolled the right with Jabaal Sheard in pursuit and completed a six-yard pass to Jonathan Krause.

On first and goal, Manziel threw an incomplete pass into the right back of the end zone to tight end Gary Barnidge. On second down, Manziel threw a quick pass over the middle to wide receiver Charles Johnson who dropped the pass in the front of the end zone. On third down, Manziel pitched to Lewis for two yards. On third down, Manziel ws pressured by linebacker Jamaal Westerman and threw the ball out of the back of the end zone.

Quick quarterback update: Hoyer and Manziel have had two drives, Tyler Thigpen has had one.

After a penalty on a field goal, Manziel came back onto the field. Four wide receivers bunched to the right, Manziel threw a quick pas to wide receiver Taylor Gabriel for a two-yard loss. Westerman and linebacker Zac Diles were in on the tackle.

To start the second quarter, Hoyer threw an incomplete 16-yard pass to Austin on first down. New safety Jim Leonard was on the coverage. Tate put together a nice 11-yard run. Austin continues to be Hoyer’s top target. He caught a seven-yard pass. On the next play, Hoyer faked a hand off and passed to tight end MarQueis Gray for a 12-yard gain. A hand off to West was quickly stuffed by Sheard up the middle. On the next play, Hoyer threw an incomplete pass to tight end Jim Dray. Sheard continued his strong play against the run, stopping West run of minus-two yards. Wide receiver Andrew Hawkins caught a pass for minus-three yards.

Cundiff connected on a 53-yard field goal.

Changing things up, Manziel took the field with the ball at his own 25-yard line. A pitch to running back Edwin Baker for five yards. Manziel took the next play on a run to the left for nine yards. With Manziel was in the shotgun on the ensuing first down and threw the ball out of the back of the end zone. Baker took the ball for a run on second down for an eight-yard gain to the left. On third and two, Manziel rolled to the left and overshot Gabriel in the end zone. Manziel stayed on the field on fourth down and threw on a roll out to his left incomplete to Hawkins.

Hoyer and the first team offense were back on the field at their own 25-yard line. He threw an incomplete pass with Barkevious Mingo pressuring. Tate took the ball for a run on second down for a carry of minus one yards. Tate split out wide at receiver on two consecutive plays. One play was a penalty on the offense, and the next was an 11-yard pass to Austin. The next play was an interception by Mingo following a tip by defensive lineman Jacobbi McDaniel.

Manziel and the second-team offense returned to the field, but ended in a 28-yard field goal by Cundiff.

Shortly after this play, the Browns finished the scrimmage early to avoid the bad weather .
