NFL Scouting Combine recap: Saturday-Sunday

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 28, 2011

This is my first time covering the NFL Scouting Combine, so I'll use this blog to share my experiences. Here's a recap of my time in Indianapolis from Saturday through Sunday:

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton topped New York Jets coach Rex Ryan by drawing the largest crowd of reporters to his news conference, which resembled a concert from my point of view, this past weekend at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Media reviews of his interview were mixed. Some writers called him charming while others said he was a phony. Either way, almost everyone stopped by to listen.

Potential target file: Miami CB Brandon Harris

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 27, 2011

If the Browns want to draft a cornerback after the first round in this year's draft, they might want to listen to the case University of Miami cornerback Brandon Harris made for himself Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

"I’m very versatile," Harris said. "I love the game of football. It’s not just something I do just to do. I was born into this game. I think my love for the game and passion separates me from a lot of people. I'm able to do a lot of things on the football field. At Miami, they played me in the slot a lot and I also played outside. I was able to move around and make a lot of plays. Being able to blitz from the outside and cover guys man-to-man in the slot, I was able to do a lot things that they wanted me to do."

What exactly is the West Coast offense? Browns coach Pat Shurmur explains

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 27, 2011

The term "West Coast offense" goes hand in hand with Browns President Mike Holmgren and members of his coaching tree.

With Pat Shurmur, a member of Holmgren's fraternity, now in place as Cleveland's head coach, the Browns will convert to a West Coast system. So what exactly is the West Coast offense?

New Browns defensive assistants aren't new to Pat Shurmur, Tom Heckert

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 27, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur and General Manager Tom Heckert are thrilled they were able to add senior defensive assistant Ray Rhodes and linebackers coach Bill Davis to their staff. After all, they go way back with each coach.

Rhodes, pictured right, has 30 years of coaching experience in the NFL, including stints as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers (1999) and the Philadelphia Eagles (1995-98). Davis has been a defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals (2009-10) and the San Francisco 49ers (2005-06).

NFL Scouting Combine recap: Wednesday-Friday

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 26, 2011

This is my first time covering the NFL Scouting Combine, so I'll use this blog to share my experiences. Here's a recap of my time in Indianapolis from Wednesday through Friday:

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan made headlines Thursday, when he guaranteed his team would win the Super Bowl next season. "I believe we will be the team that wins it period, plain and simple," Ryan said. "I’m not afraid to stand up here and say we’re going to get it done. It’s not just going to be because of my efforts, it’s going to be from our team’s efforts, our fans’ efforts, our organization’s efforts."

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett dazzled by his new defensive coordinator, Rob Ryan

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 24, 2011

Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said he chose Rob Ryan as his defensive coordinator in part because the organization wanted someone who is familiar with a 3-4 scheme. But the presentation Ryan, who served as the Browns' defensive coordinator during the past two seasons, gave in his interview put him over the top.

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 24, 2011

LSU offensive lineman Joseph Barksdale said he has talked with the Browns at the NFL Scouting Combine. One of his interviews took an interesting turn, though he wouldn't say which NFL team asked him the strangest question he has heard since he arrived in Indianapolis.

"Somebody asked me when the last time I did heroin was," Barksdale said. ... "I've never done heroin. I don't even smoke cigarettes."

Browns CB Joe Haden visits team's facility to learn new system

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 23, 2011

Browns cornerback Joe Haden has been poking around the team's headquarters in Berea, trying to learn what he can about new defensive coordinator Dick Jauron's system. During an interview today with Pro Football Talk Live, Haden said he will return to the Browns' facility Thursday to cram before a potential lockout threatens his chances to study with the coaches.

"I went up and actually talked to the coaching staff," Haden said. "I met up with them probably a week ago and talked to coach (Pat) Shurmur for like 30 minutes. (I) talked to my position coach. They kept him, (defensive backs) coach Jerome Henderson, and that's one thing I was happy about a whole lot 'cause me, (safety) T.J. (Ward), (cornerback) Sheldon (Brown), we had a really good, really close relationship with our coach.

Browns WR/KR Josh Cribbs named pro athlete of the year

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 10, 2011

Browns wide receiver and kick returner Josh Cribbs was named the Professional Athlete of the Year on Thursday night during the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. Browns offensive lineman Joe Thomas and Indians outfielder Shin-Soo Choo were the other nominees.

Before Cribbs accepted the award, he met with reporters and acknowledged he had a disappointing 2010 season. He scored only one touchdown, a 65-yard reception, and he wasn't nearly as productive returning kickoffs and punts as he had been in the past. Teams often avoided kicking to him, and dislocated toes on his right foot hindered him for nearly half of the season.

Poll: Do the Browns need an offensive coordinator?

By Nate Ulrich Published: February 1, 2011

Maybe the Browns won't hire an offensive coordinator after all.

The Browns reportedly had considered Mark Whipple an offensive coordinator candidate, but they hired him as a quarterbacks coach on Monday. With coach Pat Shurmur planning to call the offense's plays and Whipple filling another role, it's possible the Browns won't immediately replace Brian Daboll, who's now the Miami Dolphins' offensive coordinator.
