Transcript from news conference with Browns coach Pat Shurmur

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 30, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this afternoon following practice. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “We’ve been talking about it all week, this is a Friday in our world.  That was a typical Friday practice.  Before I get going, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, Eric Steinbach is having surgery this morning.  He’s having surgery on his back.  I think the surgery started around 10:00 and we’ve been trying to get a call and get an update, but we haven’t heard anything yet.  I hate to speculate as to what’s going to happen with that. We kind of made decision yesterday, late in the day, that he was finally going to have the surgery.  He tried to do some treatments to see if it would rectify itself, it didn’t so that was the next action.  We’ll find out about that.”

Browns OL Eric Steinbach out for the season

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 30, 2011

Left guard Eric Steinbach had successful surgery to repair a disc problem in his back, but the Browns will place him on injured reserve today, coach Pat Shurmur said.

"He was a starter, so we're gonna have to make some decisions to see who plays left guard for us," Shurmur said. "So we'll be going through that process."

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this morning before practice. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “I guess it’s still morning so good morning.  Today in the Browns’ world, it’s Thursday.  I realize it’s Monday, but it’s Thursday as we prepare our team for a game on Thursday, which is Sunday.  The focus today, although we will be doing a lot of competitive work Browns verses Browns, is short yardage, goal line and third down like we would typically work on on a Thursday’s practice.  That’s the focus of the day, again, special teams as well.  Again, we’ll have a half hour of special teams practice that runs right into the 1:00 team practice.  That’s the focus of the day and that’s the feel I want the players to get as they learn their weekly schedule.  We’re kind of mocking this up before we get to the regular season.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this morning before practice. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “We just had our walk-through. I really don’t have anything to add.  We had a chance to visit the day before yesterday so there’s not much to add from that standpoint.  As the media you can get use to this, this would be a Wednesday in your mind.  I’m not sure what day this is but in my mind it’s Wednesday.  We’ll have meetings in the morning.  We’ll have a walk-through or a jog-through at 11:15 which will go to about 11:45, on Wednesday’s I’ll come in here and give you what you need.  We’ll have a 12:30 practice which will be special teams for a half hour.  It’s a dedicated half hour special teams practice and then we’ll start the main practice at 1:00 which will also include special teams.  Then after practice, during the year, we’ll have the open locker room.  Well this week what we’ll do is you can just get the guys coming off the field today after 1:00, if you’re interested in them.  Then we’ll go onto meetings and the rest of our day.  That’s what they’re learning, the players and the weekly schedule.  As we prepare for Chicago, obviously I think every team has their first regular season opponent kind of in the back of their mind, but I think we’ll focus here for the next couple of days on Chicago as we teach the players the process and the urgency of the meetings and the practices and what not.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this afternoon following a walk-through practice. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “I don’t have much to add from last night.  I think I’ll stick with my comments after the game after watching the tape.  In certain instances in the game, there are things in there better than I thought and in certain spots you can see errors that were made that are killers.  We were out here today getting rid of it.  Part of a process of a game win, lose or draw its 24-hours.  You come in, you correct the mistakes and in the case of today, we came out and did some physical work with the idea that we’re still in training camp mode.  The players were great.  The guys that made errors really absorbed it and we did a very good job of going through the corrections.  Now we’re moving on to the Chicago Bears and the first regular season game.”

The Browns fell to the Philadelphia Eagles tonight in the third preseason game of the year for both teams.  Coach Pat Shurmur played his starters for the majority of the first half (there were a few plays in which defensive backups entered the mix before halftime), and they repeatedly failed to respond to big momentum swings caused by turnovers and penalties.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today after the 17th practice of training camp. Here is the transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “Injury wise, nothing of note today.  Peyton (Hillis) didn’t practice, he had a little bit of a sore back this morning.  We don’t anticipate that it’s a big deal.  To start out, this will be the last opportunity for the fans to come watch us practice.  I think the players and coaches are really embracing the fans that here and we’re very lucky to have such great fan base.  I know our players appreciate the efforts that our fans make to come watch practice and it’s always fun when there’s people watching you do what you do.  I know they’re doing that now and it happened to be a beautiful day.  Much like every other second day before a preseason game we worked on a lot of red zone today, which again was good.  There was some excellent competition.  The defense did a nice job, they were tight to the routes.  We made some plays offensively, which was good.  Then there were some great plays of course on defense.  I thought there was some excellent competition there.”

Browns sign OL Joe Thomas to contract extension

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 22, 2011

The Browns have signed offensive lineman Joe Thomas to a contract extension, agent Peter Schaffer said Monday night. It's a seven-year, $84 million deal with about $44 million guaranteed, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. The Browns have yet to make an announcement.

Thomas, 26, has established a reputation as one of the best left tackles in the NFL and has made the Pro Bowl in four consecutive seasons since the Browns drafted him third overall in 2007. General Manager Tom Heckert made it well known that he planned to sign Thomas to a contract extension, but Thomas didn't think it would happen this soon.

(Opening statement)- “I know who (Mike Holmgren) the boss is (joking).  I’m well aware of it, I’m glad he is by the way. Coach, for the record, he’s been a huge, huge help to me on a lot of different topics.  From things that happen game day to how we do things.  I’ve got a lot of respect for that and I appreciate everything he does. Today, nothing knew really to add to the injury list from Friday.  Today, Josh Cribbs tweeked his hamstring just a little.  He finished up his day when he felt that hamstring tweek so we’ll see where he is with that.  Other than that there wasn’t anything to report from the other night.  If you have specific questions I’ll answer them.  Practice was good, just like the last two games we put them in pads and I felt like they responded well.  We did some good work, ended with a couple two-minute drills.  Which are good because it makes them think and respond to the quarterback and I thought we had good competition.”

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 20, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters Friday night after the team's preseason game against the Detroit Lions. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “Let me start with the injuries.  Brandon Jackson had turf toe; he was getting evaluated we’ll know more about him tomorrow.  Evan Moore got dinged up.  They brought him in and I haven’t had a chance to fully get all the information on that one yet, so he’s being evaluated.  That’s it really for the most part on the injuries.  Typically on a game like this, we’ll wake up in the morning and there will be some other guys that feel a little bit sore.  Second half, and really throughout, and although we found a way to get up 21-13 and there was some really good stuff in the first half.  Then we come out in the second half and score right away, which was good.  It’s very hard to get that type of a lead in the NFL.  Then we really started getting pretty sloppy.  When you look at it, numerous penalties and then those two fumbles in the second half led directly to points.  Those are killers.  I told the guys, ‘The guys that are in the game are in charge of winning the game and you cant be sloppy.’  You have to take care of the football and you cant have penalties because it gets you out of rhythm, its gets you behind as far as trying to move the football because you have long-yardage situations.  There’s a lesson in that and fortunately, its preseason.  Again, there was some good stuff in there to build on.  There were a lot of guys that got a lot of playing time.  We had six or seven guys that would typically be starters that weren’t in the game.  A lot of the others guys kind of got pushed up to the front and some of the guys that were twos and threes got a lot of work in the second half.  That’s about what I have for you, I’m disappointed especially in how sloppy the second half was.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today after the 14th practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “We had a good practice this morning.  We did a lot of red zone, tried to keep the same format as we did a week ago.  I took the pads off the guys this morning.  We just worked in helmets and protective spider pads.  I feel like we got a lot of work done.  Today’s practice, (Eric) Steinbach’s back tightened up on him a little bit so we took him in side, just precautionary.  T.J. Ward felt his hamstring a little bit, again, precautionary there.  Peyton Hillis, at the end of practice, felt his hamstring just a little bit.  This is the time of year when you start to get some soft tissue injuries.  I wouldn’t call those injuries yet, there was a lot of work that got done so it was just precautionary with T.J. and Peyton.  Otherwise, it was good work.  We got 50 snaps in the red zone today, which is good, between 7-on-7 and team.  That’s a very important part of the game, being successful there whether you’re scoring touchdowns or preventing the scores.  I felt like that competition was good.”

(Opening statement)- “As usual, I’ll start with the injuries.  Jabari Fletcher wasn’t out there and Chris Gocong as you know he had the stinger.  Scott Fujita has a bruised thigh.  It’s going to take a little bit of time to settle down.  Eric Hagg had surgery yesterday, as far as we know it went well, cleaned up some cartilage in there to the best of my knowledge.  Mo (Mohamed Massaquoi) was out here in a shoe today.  He’s been running in the pool and he’s making progress. Carlton Mitchell, we talked about the finger.  Ben Watson and Usama Young, Ben has a hamstring issue and we’re just settling down, the same with Usama.  Guys that you saw practicing were (Montario) Hardesty.  He got a pretty good load of reps today, which was good.  Everybody else, there’s really nothing really to report.  It was a spirited day.  We had a couple move the ball periods.  I thought the guys competed well.  I told them after practice there were plays being made on both sides.  They were challenging and it was fun.  On another note, I would say we had a lot of celebrities here today.  Jim Tressel was here with Dave Adolph, a former Browns assistant.  Then you have Lloyd Carr.  We had the former Ohio State and former Michigan coaches here.  Then we had Chris Grant and a big contingent from the Cavs were here as well.  It was fun.  I enjoyed visiting with Lloyd Carr and Jim Tressel. They are guys that I’ve admired in coaching.  Actually, Lloyd tried to recruit me out of high school so I’ve known him for a long time.  It was good to see them.  I’m glad they came out and enjoyed practice.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this afternoon following the team's 12th practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “First, before I get to the injuries, I’d like to apologize to the fans.  We had so much rain yesterday and it was raining this morning.  The forecast said it was going to rain even further.  When we got here this morning, I made the decision we we’re going to go inside.  Well then, after the morning meetings, I came outside and walked around and found out that our fields actually held up and absorbed the water a little better than we thought they would, which is credit to Chris Powell and his crew.  It’s always better to practice outside if you can, so that’s why we did it that and it was unfortunate we couldn’t have the fans here today.  Some of the guys that you didn’t see out there today: Ben Watson felt his hamstring a little bit, nothing there just precautionary. Scott Fujita with a thigh, again precautionary.  T.J. Ward had something with his tooth and he’s at the dentist.  Brian Schaefering got his foot stepped on today.  You might have seen him limping or not taking as many reps at the end.  Montario (Hardesty) was out there today.  I know that’s always been something we’ve talking about.  It looked like he took some reps and did a good job.  Firsts for everything and first for this team, especially the young guys, the day after a day off after a preseason game.  We put them back in pads.  It felt, naturally, a little slow getting started, but I think the paced picked up.  There was pretty good banging.  I think we got a lot of work done.  As you can see there all out getting their extra stuff now.  This is an important day, tomorrow and Wednesday of course to use them as padded days.  As we get closer to Friday, we’ll take them out of pads.”

Coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters Saturday night after the Browns defeated the Green Bay Packers 27-17 in the preseason opener for both teams. Here is the transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “Before I get started let me just talk about injuries.  Fortunately, there’s not much to talk about.  Coye Francies has a lower back (injury), but he’s day-to-day.  Carlton Mitchell wasn’t in there.  He had surgery on his finger and he’ll be out a couple of weeks.  Eric Hagg will have surgery Monday on a minor knee deal.  Those two guys didn’t compete and then you had the other list of guys that weren’t in the game.  It was fun.  It’s fun to play the game.  I told the players before the game that playing games is what coaches and players do.  All through camp they’ve kind of responded and worked hard.  There were some good things that happened in the game.  We tried to set a record with our first play called ‘time out’.  It’s just an indication that there’s some communication that needs to be worked out as we move forward, but I thought the effort was good.  There were some guys that showed up that we expected to show up and make plays.  There were some others guys that flashed and did well for themselves.  There were a lot of game situations in there that we had a chance to work through.  From a two-minute drill at the end of the half where we were just trying to work the ball down the field to a four-minute drill at the end; we had some clock management situations to work through.  We had a challenge.  In the preseason you’re working through all those mechanics.  I thought there was good communication amongst the coaches.  I thought the players played hard.  I talked to them about when bad plays happen in the game that you have to overcome them and play on.  We turned the ball over a couple of times, which the defense stopped.  There’s something to build on there, but we have a long way to go.  There were some flashes of things there that I think we can build on.  The players come back to work on Monday and we will get back to the business of training camp for a couple of days and then start to prepare for Detroit.  All in all, it was a night where we got to see some things from our players.  As coaches, we got a chance to communicate and I’ve got a long list of things that we’ll end up working on and talking about.  It’s nice to see these players have success.”

Transcript from news conference with Browns coach Pat Shurmur

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 11, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this morning following the 11th practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “Let me start with the injuries.  (Jabari) Fletcher again wasn’t out here with a knee sprain.  (Chris) Gocong again with a stinger.  (Montario) Hardesty, as you saw, there’s no change there. He’s working on the side.  (Mohamed) Massaquoi was out here in a boot.  He looks like he’s getting ready to go to a shoe soon and be moving around.  (Dominic) Alford was out in practice today in a limited basis.  You saw he left yesterday with a back injury.  In practice, Eric Hagg in the red-zone drill, kind of reached to make a play on a corner route and just fell on his knee.  There just having it evaluated.  I’m not sure what his status is yet.  As you saw, I took the pads off the players today.  They had three days in pads, about nine hours in pads in the last three days.  The idea of today’s practice and we have to do this for the season, there is a learning to curve to able get your work in in just helmets and spider pads.  We did a 9-on-7 drill, then we did quite a bit of team work with a red-zone move the ball, team and third downs.  The key to these practices, like every other one, is that they’re moving fast, which I thought they did.  You could tell they’re a little heavy legged from three straight days in pads.  Which is okay, that’s the way they should be at this time of year.  Now, they have a little bit of time to get their body’s back before we play Green Bay.  Normal afternoon schedule, we’ll have meetings and walk-through.  The focus will now shift to the Packers. We talked to the players, our intention is to play the ones for a quarter.  Keep in mind these preseason games are extremely important.  It’s important that we learn a lot about our team, the whole team.  Most teams approach it this way.  Whether you’re a guy that’s lined up as a first teamer, second teamer or guy fighting to make the team, every rep is valuable.  We take these games very seriously.  To start the year out against an opponent like the Super Bowl champs will be a good gauge.  We’ll try and play the ones roughly a quarter.  Then the twos will get in there for a couple of quarters.  Then the rest of the guys will play typically in the fourth quarter.  That’s generally how we’re going to do it. ”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this morning after the 10th practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “Good morning. Let me start with the injuries.  Jabari Fletcher again didn’t practice, he has a knee sprain.  Chris Gocong with a stinger, didn’t practice as well, but we didn’t see anything significant about his injury.  He’ll be back in there soon.  (Montario) Hardesty continued to work on the side and looked good running.  (Mohamed) Massaquoi as you noticed is out of a cast and in a boot now.  That is what we kind of thought would happen by this time.  Jayme Mitchell didn’t practice, a little knee soreness, but again nothing really to report there.  Dominic Alford today hurt his back and why you might have noticed him leave the field.  Otherwise, all the guys were out there and again it was good competition.  Once again, they benefitted from the lack of hot weather.  It was a beautiful day out here, but you’d like it to be just a little hotter for a training camp setting.  The guys ran around well.  This is the third padded practice in a row.  Third three hour of sorts padded practice in a row and I think they pushed through it pretty well.  We did more situational work and I thought there was great competition.  I think we’re getting better as a team.  You can see the guys communicating better while they’re playing.  You’re starting to see some guys that we’re counting on to make plays, flash and make plays.  Generally speaking, there’s less mistakes.  That tells me that they’re starting to absorb some of the stuff that we’re teaching.  I do think there is plenty to work on and even though we’re approaching the Green Bay game, I like to think we’re still in training camp mode.  Meaning that we’re doing a lot of work Browns vs. Browns.  At least up until today to get ourselves better and ready to play.”

Transcript from news conference with Browns coach Pat Shurmur

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 9, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this morning following the eighth practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “I’ll start with injuries.  Chris Gocong with a stinger didn’t practice today.  Ramzee Robinson with a groin.  (Montario) Hardesty, once again, was working on the side with his knee.  Kyle Anderson has an ankle.  (Mohamed) Massaquoi is in the cast with a foot.  Otherwise, another red zone day.  It was really good competition.  Most of the plays we ran today in the red zone, we’re adding to our list of plays.  Some of these were the first time they were running these specific plays and I thought the execution was pretty good.  It was good competition, both the 7-on-7 and the team.  The run drill, I thought, was good.  It looked like the defense, the run fits were proper, there was good banging and I think we got a lot out of that.  There was some good stuff there as well.  It was a good solid practice.  Of course we’ll watch it, do our walk-through and move on.  As we start to approach Green Bay, of course, our thoughts will start drifting that direction as we put together a plan for playing the Packers. ”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters Monday following the seventh practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement) - “Good long practice this morning.  As hot as it was on Saturday it got cool on us today.  What we did was add a little bit of group conditioning near the end of practice.  As far as injuries today, Chris Gocong got a stinger.  He settled down and our understanding is he’ll be fine.  Ramzee Robinson with a groin, you saw Montario (Hardesty) off to the side again working.  Just part of the plan that we have as we go forward.  Other than that, I thought there was some good banging in short yardage and goal line again, and then we worked base and third down situations.  It felt like it was a good competitive practice.  Then we got a little bit of conditioning near the end, which I thought was good.  It was skilled drilled conditioning. We did a two-minute drill with the offense and the defense was working on their pressures.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today after the team's Family Day at Cleveland Browns Stadium. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(On what it was like to practice in the stadium)- “It was exciting.  I think the ritual of playing in a stadium is something that excites all players and coaches.  Even though it was a practice against one another, you could see the excitement in the player’s faces as they were getting dressed.  Then running out of the tunnel as your group was announced, it’s one of those things we all look forward to as players and coaches.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this morning following the sixth practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “First, before I get started, I wanted to recognize the world wide Browns Backers Clubs that are here.  We’ve got one of the most fantastic support groups and fans in the NFL.  We’re glad they were here to witness what I thought was a very competitive practice.  As far as injuries go, Jabari Fletcher sprained his new knee.  Joe Haden woke up today with a tight hamstring. Him not being out here was precautionary, there’s nothing really to report there.  That’s about it, unless something creeps up here like a finger or a sore arm.  There’s nothing in there, beyond that, to report.  I thought the work was good. It was pretty physical this morning.  The guys that practiced yesterday afternoon responded pretty well to wearing their pads.  Some of the obvious things, Phil Taylor, his presence was felt in there.  You could see in some of those running drills.  He’s a tough guy to move.  He did a nice job.  At the end, there was a very competitive period with the two-minute drill.  We got a lot of plays in one minute there.  I thought there was great competition.  It was a good, solid training camp morning.  The players completed well.  Fortunately, we walked away with no injuries other than Jabari.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters Thursday evening following the fifth practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “A lot happened today as we know.  The plan to practice the guys in the afternoon I think kind of worked out.  We kind of got our business done prior to 4:00, but then you have to get the official go ahead.  What we did was we brought the free agents out and they were eager, so we took their helmets away.  That kept them from jumping in there without us seeing it.  We had a little deal where we called the field then they said it was done and then Kent Johnston quickly worked the guys out and got them into drills. They really got most of the team work so that was good.  The plan to hold off and get it done I think helped us.  We really got most of the team out here today.  It was a good work.  We had Jordan Norwood, got a hip flexor.  Jason Pinkston got a little shoulder, but basically I thought it was a great day.  We got a chance to practice red zone.  As you know it’s very, very important.  One of the coaches said the tape we get to show now is like gold.  Now we can talk to our players about how to play the coverage and how to run the routes.  That’s always a fun day because you’re either scoring or defending to score and thought there was really good competition.  Other than that it was just a beautiful afternoon.  The fans were out.  It was fun. Now we will get back on schedule.  There will be a quick turnaround.  We will have dinner and then get back on our normal schedule and get ready for practice tomorrow morning.”

Transcript from news conference with Browns coach Pat Shurmur

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 2, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this morning following the fourth practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “Today’s practice was a really key one.  In the progression of training camp, today is the day you typically do short yardage and goal line.  It’s also the day when two-minute gets installed for the first time.  It’s situational.  Goal line and short yardage are physical drills.  I think we got a lot out of those today.  I feel good about the progress we made there.  Then we had a chance at the end to work some two-minute situations.  I felt the general competition was good. You saw that we held Montario (Hardesty) out. Jabaal (Sheard), you saw left, I think he has a little bit of a hamstring, but I’ll know more here as we go.  Josh Cribbs again did not participate, Carlton Mitchell, Ben Watson and Reggie Hodges at the end there.  He has an issue with his left foot, so they’re getting that evaluated.  I don’t know anything more about that at this point. As I mentioned yesterday, the guys are tired and sore.  They do sustain at times little pulls and nicks.  That’s part of the process as we get ready to play our first preseason game and our first regular season game.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this morning following the third practice of training camp. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “First day in pads, it’s always a little bit sloppier.  Some of these guys haven’t carried their pads in competitive situations since the middle of last year.  For the most part, the work was good, we got some good runs.  We got a run drill in, in pads, which is always the starting point.  Then we got some good runs in team to move the ball.  Then the backed up in four minute situations, which are typically run laden periods.  Also, for the quarterbacks getting use to throwing in shoulder pads, I thought it was good.  Some of the receiver’s stepped up.  I thought there was good competition.  There were periods where I thought the defense looked very, very good.  Then there were also some bigger plays on offense as well, got a couple long gains.  It appeared like, without knowing much, we pulled through it physically okay, which is a little bit of a concern.  I’m getting a pretty good feel now for where they’re at physically, but not knowing totally, I think they held up decent.”
