Browns notes: QB Brian Hoyer to start Sunday vs. Bengals; Brandon Weeden ruled out

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 25, 2013

Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer will start Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, coach Rob Chudzinski announced this morning.

Quarterback Brandon Weeden won’t play against the Bengals as he continues to recover from a sprained right thumb he suffered Sept. 15. Weeden hasn’t thrown since he was hurt, but Chudzinski expects him to do so this week.

Punter honored

In other Browns news, punter Spencer Lanning has earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance Sunday in a 31-27 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Lanning had five punts with a net average of 46.8 yards, including a career-long 56 yarder and two punts inside the 20-yard line. He also completed an 11-yard touchdown pass on a fake field goal to tight end Jordan Cameron. After kicker Billy Cundiff suffered a strained quad, Lanning also kicked the team’s extra point with 51 seconds remaining to give the Browns a four-point advantage.

Injury updates

Outside linebacker Jabaal Sheard (sprained knee) and Cundiff (strained quad) won’t practice today, Chudzinski said. The Browns will see how each player progresses throughout the week.

Right guard Shawn Lauvao (ankle) will practice today, Chudzinski said.

Roster move

The Browns re-signed linebacker Justin Staples to their practice squad.
