Browns officially announce trade with Miami for Davone Bess

By Ryan Lewis Published: April 26, 2013

The Cleveland Browns today agreed to a trade with the Miami Dolphins in which they acquired wide receiver Davone Bess. In addition, the Browns traded fourth (104th) and fifth (164th) round draft picks while receiving fourth (111th) and seventh (217th) round draft choices. The trade is contingent on Bess passing a physical.

“Davone is a proven receiver who has been extremely productive throughout his career,” said Browns Head Coach Rob Chudzinski.  “He possesses outstanding hands and separation skills, while also showing the ability to pick up yards in key situations.  Because of his talent and experience, we feel as though he can come in and help us right away.”

“The opportunity to acquire an established veteran such as Davone was one we felt we could not pass up,” said Browns CEO Joe Banner.  “We believe this is a move that will immediately upgrade our football team, and as we have throughout the offseason, we are committed to improving our club through all possible means.”

Since 2009, Bess has caught 267 passes, the 14th-highest total among all NFL wide receivers during this time. In his career (2008-12), he has accounted for 130 third-down receptions, second-most in the NFL over this five year span, trailing only Roddy White (146). Over the last four years (2009-12), 42 percent of Bess’ receptions have come on third down, which is the highest rate among all NFL players with 100 or more catches. His career reception total of 321 trails only Wes Welker (560) for the most in the league by any undrafted player since 2008.

A three-year letterman at the University of Hawaii (2005-07), Bess started in all 39 contests in which he appeared, recording 293 receptions for 3,610 yards with 41 touchdowns. His 293 catches were a school and conference record as he was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection each season. He is the only player in Warriors history to record three 1,000-yard receiving seasons as he set a school and conference records for games with a touchdown reception (29). His 41 career touchdown catches also set a school record.

A native of Oakland, California, the 5-10, 190-pound Bess attended Skyline High School, where he lettered in football, baseball and basketball. Off the field, he has established “The Bess Route Foundation”, which is dedicated to shaping positive lifestyles for underprivileged children and providing funds for families in need.
