Defensive end Ahtyba Rubin (calf) and right guard Shawn Lauvao (high ankle sprain) were sidelined today during Browns practice and will likely be ruled out this afternoon for Sunday’s road game against the Baltimore Ravens.
The rest of the players on the 53-man roster practiced today.
Rubin and Lauvao sat out Sunday during the Browns’ season-opening, 23-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
Billy Winn started in Rubin’s place at left defensive end. Winn played 37-of-77 defensive snaps against the Dolphins despite dealing with calf cramps and finished with two tackles.
“With Rubin out, Winn stepped up and was a starter,” defensive coordinator Ray Horton said. “He provided an extra push up front. It hurts [to be without Rubin] because he’s a good player that you don’t have on the field, but I have fantastic and tremendous trust in our players. I’m using a word our players use – next man up. I don’t need to know who’s in the game. I know we’ll have a good solid player in the game.”
Oniel Cousins started in Lauvao's place at right guard and committed four penalties against the Dolphins, including a holding call that wiped out tight end Gary Barnidge’s 20-yard touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter. According to ProFootballFocus.com, Cousins also allowed two sacks and three hurries.
“His pass protection was OK,” Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said. “The penalties we have to eliminate. Oniel has worked and improved, and we need to have him continue to improve. I’m confident he’ll improve.”
