Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden will not need surgery on sprained right thumb, league source says

Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden will not need surgery on his sprained right thumb, a league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal.

After Weeden underwent an MRI Monday and was examined by the team’s orthopedic surgeon today, it was determined that he won’t need surgery.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news today. Weeden could be ready to play as soon as next week.

Weeden, the 22nd overall pick in last year’s draft, has been ruled out for Sunday's road game against the Minnesota Vikings. Brian Hoyer will start in his place.

Weeden injured the thumb on his throwing hand when he inadvertently smacked it against left guard John Greco’s helmet Sunday in the fourth quarter of the Browns’ 14-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. X-rays were negative, he underwent an MRI Monday and Browns coach Rob Chudzinski refuted a report by WTAM (1100-AM) that Weeden could miss most or even possibly all of the season.

“Brandon Weeden will be out this week,” Chudzinski said Wednesday. “Early indications are that it is not a long-term issue. Everything has been positive up to this point. He’ll follow up with a hand specialist [Thursday], and we’ll see, get a better indication later on this week on his status going forward.”

Chudzinski, though, would not commit to Weeden starting again once he’s able to return.

“I’m going to leave all the options open,” Chudzinski said. “Really, it’s a matter of where [Weeden is] at from a health standpoint and all that plays into it and where we’re at and how guys are playing as well.”

Greco said he didn’t know Weeden hit his hand against his helmet until he watched the play on video.

“I apologized obviously, but that’s football,” Greco said. “I know Brandon understands it. The main thing is that you want to make sure his hand is all right. His working with the trainers to get that right and move forward.”
