Browns running back Peyton Hillis defeated Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick in a showdown to become the cover athlete for the Madden NFL 12 video game. The announcement was made today on ESPN2's "SportsNation."
One player from each NFL team was entered into a tournament to become the cover athlete. Fans voted online to determine the winners from each round. Hillis, seeded 10th in his bracket, beat Vick, seeded third, by earning 66 percent of the vote in the finals.
Hillis pulled off several upsets to reach the finals. In the semifinals, he garnered 61 percent of the vote to oust top-seeded Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Seventh-seeded Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, second-seeded Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and sixth-seeded Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles also fell to Hillis.
Through the first four rounds of voting, Vick had defeated his opponents by an average of 30 percent of the vote. He was the game's cover athlete in 2004. But this time, Vick was stopped by Hillis.
