The Browns and WKYC have replaced former quarterback Bernie Kosar as the color commentator for their preseason game telecasts, the team announced this evening as it unveiled its exhibition schedule.
Veteran commentator Solomon Wilcots will fill Kosar’s former role. Jim Donovan will remain the play-by-play man.
Meanwhile, the Browns are discussing potential new roles with Kosar that could include appearances on their website and radio shows. Kosar also could be part of the pregame telecasts for preseason games, but it won’t be in his former role as color commentator.
Wilcots is a regular-season analyst for the NFL on CBS. Before launching his broadcast career in 1994, he played defensive back in the NFL for six seasons.
“We welcome Solomon and are excited to look further into additional opportunities to continue to engage Bernie with our fans,” Browns President Alec Scheiner said in a statement. “We want Browns fans to look forward to seeing and hearing his continued contributions and analysis on not only our preseason telecasts, but also our radio network and ClevelandBrowns.com.”
Kosar created a stir last year when he ripped former St. Louis Rams backup quarterback Kellen Clemens, the team's receivers and receivers coach Ray Sherman during a preseason game. Rams coach Jeff Fisher responded by saying he lost respect for Kosar. Former Browns CEO Joe Banner then released a statement explaining that the organization reprimanded Kosar for "the personal and unprofessional approach that Bernie took with some of his comments during the broadcast." Kosar defended his strong opinions during the next preseason telecast without publicly apologizing.
The Browns will open the preseason on the road against the Detroit Lions at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 9. They’ll visit the Washington Redskins at 8 p.m. Aug. 18 for a Monday Night Football exhibition game that’ll be nationally televised on ESPN.
The Browns will host the St. Louis Rams in their “dress rehearsal” exhibition game at 8 p.m. Aug. 23. Then they’ll host the Chicago Bears in the preseason finale at 8 p.m. Aug. 28.
All Browns preseason games will be televised locally on WKYC (Channel 3) and air on the team’s radio network, which includes flagship stations 92.3 The Fan, ESPN 850 WKNR and 98.5 WNCX.
