The Browns have signed rookie fullback Owen Marecic to a four-year deal, a league source told the Beacon Journal this afternoon. The Browns selected Marecic in the fourth round (124th overall) of this year's draft.
The 6-foot, 246-pound Marecic was a full-time starter on both sides of the ball -- he played fullback and linebacker -- at Stanford University. He was the only player in Division I Football Bowl Subdivision to do so.
Marecic primarily served as a blocking fullback in college. He compiled only 36 carries for 67 yards and one touchdown in his four seasons at Stanford, but Browns coach Pat Shurmur said Marecic is an ideal fullback for the West Coast offense.
"Nobody will outwork him," said Browns tight end Evan Moore, who was Marecic's teammate for one season at Stanford. ... "As you saw in college, he can play. He's physical, and he keeps his mouth shut and just gets it done. That's the kind of guy they like around here, and I'm not surprised they're bringing him in."
