The Browns are scheduled to try out veteran Pro Bowl kickers Dan Carpenter and Billy Cundiff Tuesday in Berea, a league source confirmed for the Beacon Journal, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team won’t reveal who will audition.
The Browns could add other kickers to the mix, too, but right now, the competition is expected to come down to Carpenter and Cundiff, the source said.
The Browns do not have a kicker on their active roster with their regular-season opener Sunday against the visiting Miami Dolphins right around the corner. Last week, the organization terminated the contract of veteran Shayne Graham and placed Brandon Bogotay on the waived/injured list with a groin injury. Bogotay officially move to the Browns’ IR Sunday after passing through waivers unclaimed.
Browns coach Rob Chudzinski conceded the team’s decision makers haven’t been satisfied so far in their quest to replace Pro Bowler Phil Dawson, who signed a one-year $2.25 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers in March after the new regime let him walk in free agency.
The New York Jets signed Carpenter and released Cundiff Aug. 27. The Jets then cut Carpenter Friday in favor of Nick Folk.
The Miami Dolphins drafted Caleb Sturgis in the fifth round and cut Carpenter Aug. 14 after he spent the previous five seasons with them. He then had a brief stint with the Arizona Cardinals before being released by them and the Jets.
Carpenter, 27, made the Pro Bowl in 2009. In his career, he has made 127-of-155 field goals (81.9 percent) and 154-of-155 extra-point kicks. During the recent preseason, he made 3-of-4 field goals. The San Diego Chargers blocked his only miss, a 26-yard attempt.
Cundiff, 33, made the Pro Bowl in 2010. He has played regular-season games for five NFL teams, including the Browns in 2009, when Dawson was sidelined with a strained calf. He made an 18-yard field goal to lift the Browns over the Buffalo Bills 6-3 on Oct. 11, 2009.
In his career, Cundiff has made 139-of-184 field goals (75.5 percent) and 217-of-218 extra-point kicks. During the recent preseason, Cundiff made all three of his field goals and all four of his extra points.
