The Browns waived cornerback Chris Owens and wide receiver Armanti Edwards off injured reserve, the team announced today.

The team placed Owens on IR Dec. 3 after he suffered a sprained knee two days earlier in a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Edwards landed on IR Nov. 20 after he suffered an injured ankle three days earlier in a loss against the Cincinnati Bengals.

On March 22, the Browns signed Owens, 27, as an unrestricted free agent to a one-year deal worth $1 million, plus incentives. After falling short in a competition with Buster Skrine for the starting cornerback job opposite Joe Haden, Owens served as the team’s nickel corner for the first 12 games of the season.

Owens, who spent the previous four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, tallied 54 tackles, including 2½ sacks, three passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery to go along with seven special-teams tackles. Rookie Leon McFadden, a third-round draft pick, became the nickel corner once Owens was hurt.

The Browns signed Edwards on Oct. 30, a few weeks after the Carolina Panthers cut him during his fourth season with the organization. The Browns brought him in to serve as their primary punt returner because Travis Benjamin suffered a season-ending torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Oct. 27 in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Edwards, 25, appeared in two games with the team and tallied one reception for 10 yards to go along with four punts returned for 28 yards (7.0 average) before he suffered the injury. Rookie safety Jordan Poyer became the primary punt returner after Edwards was sidelined.

The Jacksonville Jaguars also signed center Patrick Lewis off the Browns’ practice squad.
