Chiefs may hire Crennel
Former Browns coach Romeo Crennel is expected to the NFL next season as defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported, citing multiple sources.
The Chiefs are run by former New England personnel chief Scott Pioli, where Crennel served as defensive coordinator before coming to Cleveland in 2005. Schefter said the Chiefs wanted to hire Crennel for the 2009 season, but his hip surgery precluded that.
Clancy Pendergast is the current defensive coordinator for the Chiefs. Chiefs coach Todd Haley avoided a question on Crennel before the Browns visited Kansas City on Dec. 20.
''I've stayed away from talking about a whole bunch of that here,'' Haley said. ''Romeo is a guy I have great respect for. Even as a position coach I could think and have visuals of how Romeo handled situations. He's someone I think the world of and probably one of the better coaches in the league.''
