Game day blog: Panthers at Browns (Week 12)

By Nate Ulrich Published: November 28, 2010

Final recap: Browns 24, Panthers 23 (click here for the box score)

The Browns prevailed after Carolina Panthers kicker John Kasay's 42-yard field-goal attempt brushed the left upright and missed as time expired. The Panthers (1-10) rallied in the second half and were in position to win, but the Browns (4-7) survived after a bizarre ending. The play that set up Kasay's final field-goal attempt and the subsequent replay review and ruling created a ton of confusion. Wide receiver Brandon LaFell caught a pass from quarterback Jimmy Clausen and rolled out of bounds at Cleveland's 24-yard line with five seconds left. The catch was reviewed, and the officials ruled that LaFell got out of bounds to stop the clock. But replays show Browns cornerback Sheldon Brown touched LaFell before he rolled out of bounds. Even Browns coach Eric Mangini was baffled. He thought the game would have been over if the pass was ruled complete because he didn't expect LaFell to be ruled out of bounds after securing the ball. Either way, Kasay missed the kick, and the Browns should consider themselves very lucky. They captured a 21-7 lead with 9:12 left in the second quarter, but they failed to bury the Panthers. Instead, they let them hang around and it nearly cost them in the end. No one reflected the Browns' mood after the game as well as Brown. "Today ran the range of emotions for me, including disappointment because I thought we didn’t execute at all today," he said. "I thought we should have had a killer instinct when we had control of the game early. The sign of a championship team is understanding your opponent and when you have a killer mentality, you attack and don’t let it become like the situation we had. This is something that we need to address and it starts from top to bottom. As a veteran, we will address it, watch the film and get better." The defense continues to miss tackles in the clutch. Two plays before LaFell's catch, linebacker Chris Gocong, rookie cornerback Joe Haden and defensive back Mike Adams missed tackles before safety Ray Ventrone finally stopped Panthers running back Mike Goodson after he turned a short pass into a 32-yard gain. The Browns also lost the turnover battled 3-1. Browns quarterback Jake Delhomme beat his former team, but he also threw two interceptions. Browns tight end Evan Moore had the team's other turnover -- a lost fumble on the Panthers' 2-yard line. On the bright side, running back Peyton Hillis (26 carries for 131 yards and three touchdowns, plus six catches for 63 yards), fullback Lawrence Vickers and the Browns' offensive linemen were stellar in the running game. Hillis' third rushing touchdown of the day gave the Browns a 14-point advantage in the second quarter, but Kasay made two field goals -- 43 and 42 yards -- to trim Carolina's deficit to eight points at the end of the first half. The Browns snapped their two-game losing streak. The Panthers have the worst record in the NFL. Their lone win of the season was a 23-20 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 24.

Game day blog: Browns at Jaguars (Week 11)

By Nate Ulrich Published: November 21, 2010

Final recap: Jacksonville Jaguars 24, Browns 20 (click here for the box score)

The Browns didn't punish the Jaguars for their six turnovers, and it haunted them in the end. Four interceptions and two fumble recoveries yielded only 10 points for the Browns (3-7) on Sunday at EverBank Field. The last time a team had six takeaways and lost was on Oct. 8, 2007, when the Buffalo Bills lost to the Dallas Cowboys 25-24. Like the Browns, the Bills also finished with a plus-five turnover margin. How, exactly, did the Browns manage to fall despite finishing with such a lopsided turnover ratio? They couldn't do much on offense. In the final drive in which the Browns' offense got the ball following turnovers, it produced minus-nine yards without completing a pass or achieving a first down. Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy was under siege the entire afternoon. The Jaguars (6-4) finished with six sacks for a combined loss of 46 yards. They also hurt McCoy, who suffered a left ankle injury -- probably a sprain -- when defensive end Jordan Mincey recorded his second sack of the game early in the third quarter. The Browns' offensive line simply couldn't protect McCoy, who left the stadium wearing a walking boot, in part because it couldn't help the running game find a rhythm, either. Running back Peyton Hillis had 21 carries for 48 yards (2.3 average), and the team finished with 26 carries for 88 yards (3.4 average). Without a sufficient rushing attack, the Browns were vulnerable to the Jaguars' full-force pass rush. Sound familiar? The exact same recipe led to the Browns' 20-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 5. In that game, quarterback Seneca Wallace was consistently harassed and suffered a high ankle sprain. The Browns' defense played well for the most part, as evidenced by a season-high four sacks and the team's most takeaways since 2002. But it also couldn't stop Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew from taking control. He rushed 24 times for 132 yards (5.5 average), and caught three passes for 87 yards, including a game-changing 75-yard catch-and-run off a short screen pass from quarterback David Garrard. At least four Browns players missed opportunities to tackle Jones-Drew on the pivotal play that set up his game-winning, 1-yard touchdown run with 1:16 left in the first quarter. After the Jaguars went ahead 24-20, the Browns' offense suddenly came to life after stalling for virtually the entire second half. McCoy led the Browns from their 20-yard line to the Jaguars' 29. On Cleveland's last offensive play, he fired a pass over the middle to tight end Benjamin Watson. The ball bounced off Jaguars safety Sean Considine, then off Watson and back to Considine, who picked off the pass to seal Jacksonville's victory. The Browns didn't have any timeouts left, but there's a slight chance they would have had enough time to spike the ball and stop the clock if Watson could have made the catch. Considine intercepted the pass with five seconds left after it ricocheted off Watson at the Jaguars' 5-yard line. The final drive, though, didn't kill the Browns. The rest of the second half did, when the offense repeatedly failed to capitalize on opportunities created by the defense.

Game day blog: Browns vs. Jets (Week 10)

By Nate Ulrich Published: November 14, 2010

Final recap: New York Jets 26, Browns 20, OT (click here for the box score)

The Browns (3-6) walked away with a tough loss against the New York Jets (7-2) in part because they refused to settle for a tie. With 1:35 left in overtime, Cleveland took possession on its own 3-yard line after rookie cornerback Joe Haden intercepted a pass Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez intended for wide receiver Braylon Edwards. Instead of running the ball to wind down the clock, Browns coach Eric Mangini chose to go for the win. But the plan backfired when rookie quarterback Colt McCoy's first-down pass sailed over tight end Benjamin Watson's head and fell incomplete. Watson was wide open. Three plays later, the Browns had to punt. After Jim Leonhard's 18-yard punt return, the Jets' offense took over at the Browns' 37. On the next play, Sanchez hit Santonio Holmes with pass on a short slant route between cornerback Eric Wright and linebacker Eric Barton. Wright and Barton didn't make a tackle, and neither did rookie safety T.J. Ward, who seemingly froze as Holmes zoomed past him. Moments later, Holmes was in the end zone, and the Jets were celebrating their dramatic victory. Holmes never would have had a chance to become the Jets' hero of the day if Browns wide receiver Chansi Stuckey didn't fumble with 10:04 left in overtime. On third-and-4 at the Jets' 46, Stuckey caught a pass from McCoy, achieved a first down and then fumbled as he fought for extra yardage. The Jets recovered at their 36. If Stuckey would have held on, the Browns' worst-case scenario would have been a long field-goal attempt, the kind of clutch kicks Phil Dawson is accustomed to making. Of course, there were some positives for the Browns, too. The offense did virtually nothing in the second half until McCoy led it on a 10-play, 59-yard touchdown drive to tie the score 20-20 with 44 seconds left in the fourth quarter and ultimately force overtime. McCoy completed 18-of-31 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown for a passer rating of 88.8. He is now 2-2 as Cleveland's starting quarterback, and he has not committed a turnover in his past three games. McCoy's solid performance didn't result in the Browns' third consecutive upset victory. But the Browns still showed they can hang with anybody in the NFL, even though they fell just short in Week 10.

By Nate Ulrich Published: November 13, 2010

On Saturday, the Browns signed defensive lineman Brian Sanford to the active roster from the practice squad and waived offensive lineman Paul McQuistan, the team announced.

Originally signed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent this past May after attending the team’s rookie minicamp on a tryout basis, the 6-foot-2, 280-pound Sanford, 23, has spent this season on Cleveland’s practice squad. He appeared in 43 games at Temple University (2006-09), for which he compiled 86 tackles, eight sacks, three forced fumbles and a blocked field goal.

Poll: Should Browns rookie QB Colt McCoy continue to start?

By Nate Ulrich Published: November 7, 2010

Browns rookie quarterback Colt McCoy has made a strong case for himself in his first three starts, especially during Cleveland's past two games. He's 2-1 as Cleveland's starter, and he has helped the Browns (3-5) defeat the New Orleans Saints (6-3) and the New England Patriots (6-2). Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace are the Browns' top two quarterbacks, and McCoy was thrust into action because they have been sidelined with high-ankle sprains. But McCoy continues to play well while they recover, which begs the following question:

Game day blog: Browns vs. Patriots (Week 9)

By Nate Ulrich Published: November 7, 2010

Final recap: Browns 34, Patriots 14 (click here for the box score)

Coming off their bye week, the Browns (3-5) carried their momentum into Week 9 and stunned the New England Patriots (6-2) on Sunday at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Browns upset the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in Week 7, and then worked some magic against the Patriots, who had won five consecutive games and had the NFL's best record heading into Sunday. Coach Eric Mangini got the best his former mentor, Patriots coach Bill Belichick, and Browns running back Peyton Hillis had a career day with 184 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Browns rookie quarterback Colt McCoy made his third consecutive start, and he made a strong case for himself to remain the starter even if Seneca Wallace and Jake Delhomme return from the high-ankle sprains that kept them inactive again. McCoy completed 14-of-19 passes for 174 yards without an interception for a career-high passer rating of 101.6. He also ran for a 16-yard touchdown. His pocket presence continues to improve, as he avoided pressure several times by rolling out and throwing on the run. The Patriots failed to record a sack. Meanwhile, Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady completed 19-of-36 passes for 224 yards and two touchdowns, the only scores allowed by the Browns' defense. The Patriots were on the verge of trimming their lead to three points heading into halftime, but safety Abram Elam forced tight end Rob Gronkowski to fumble. Elam recovered at the Browns' 2-yard line, and Cleveland secured a 17-7 halftime lead. That was, arguably, the play of the game for the Browns. They used the momentum they gained from it to stop the Patriots on their opening drive of the second half. Then McCoy and Hillis led the Browns on a 10-play, 72-yard scoring drive that lasted 7 minutes. They produced another long scoring drive that started in the third quarter and ended in the fourth. The 13-play, 61-yard march lasted 7:48, and it was capped by Phil Dawson's second successful field-goal attempt of the day. Those long, efficient drives buried the Patriots and proved to everyone that McCoy can effectively guide the offense when it matters most. He should continue to start, no matter what.

Which quarterback should start for the Browns?

By Nate Ulrich Published: November 1, 2010

Browns coach Eric Mangini still has not committed to naming a starting quarterback for his team's upcoming game against the New England Patriots. Rookie Colt McCoy has started the past two games while the team's top two quarterbacks, Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace, have continued to rehabilitate from high-ankle sprains. Mangini said neither Delhomme nor Wallace will practice Monday. He said Wallace is further ahead in the rehabilitation process than Delhomme, but both of them have a shot to return to practice Wednesday.
