Jets retain Elam

The Jets matched the Browns' offer sheet for restricted free agent safety Abram Elam, the Jets announced on their web site Tuesday.

Elam, a Kent State product, would have been a candidate to replace strong safety Sean Jones, who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. Elam would have been the fifth former Jet to join coach Eric Mangini in Cleveland.

Last week the Browns reportedly signed Elam to a one-year, $1.5 million offer sheet. Elam started a career-high nine games in 2008 and totalled 56 tackles, three forced fumbles, two sacks and an interception returned 92 yards for a touchdown. He also notched 11 special teams tackles.
