Johnny Manziel, other Browns players react to LeBron's homecoming

By Nate Ulrich Published: July 11, 2014

Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel and several of his teammates used social media this afternoon to welcome NBA superstar and Akron native LeBron James back to Northeast Ohio.

In an essay published online today by Sports Illustrated, James announced he has decided to return to the Cavaliers after leaving the team in 2010 and spending the past four seasons with the Miami Heat.

James’ homecoming is particularly significant for Manziel because they are business partners.

In January, Manziel signed with LRMR Management, the marketing firm run by James’ business partner, longtime friend and fellow St. Vincent-St. Mary High School product Maverick Carter. LRMR and Fenway Sports Management, which partnered together in 2011, are representing Manziel jointly.

At a time when Manziel’s persistent partying and off-field behavior has drawn rampant criticism, the vast majority of Cleveland sports fans would welcome James becoming closer to Johnny Football and mentoring him. James’ presence in the same city also will undoubtedly divert some attention from Manziel and take some pressure off him as a result.

A compilation of messages Manziel and other Browns players posted on Twitter about James’ latest decision is below.
