Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(On D’Qwell Jackson being named AFC Defensive Player of the Month and how he has been playing)- “Really well and I think it’s richly deserved.  Obviously he’s not doing it alone, but he is really playing at a high level.  I know that we’ve talked about him before, his work ethic, his quiet leadership ability, his seriousness about his profession and he really prepares.  He is a great example for any player, but particularly the young players. It is just really a richly deserved reward.”

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 29, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “Good morning.  I have nothing new to add as far as yesterday as injuries go.  We have as many players out there practicing now as we’ve had since the beginning of training camp, which is good.  Some of them on a limited basis, but they’re all dress and going, which is good.  Other than that I guess D’Qwell (Jackson) had a nice honor, AFC Defensive Player of the Month.  I lead that into everything he’s done through training camp.  It doesn’t surprise me that he’s playing at an extremely high level.  I expected it based on what I’ve learned about him in the last few months.  Normally when your MIKE linebacker is playing well and doing good things, it adds a huge boost to your defense and I’m glad for that.”

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 28, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this morning. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “Good morning.  I normally start with injuries, there’s not really anything new to report based on what I talked about on Monday.  The guys that we thought would be out there Monday, were there at the walkthrough and we’ll see how things progress.  A couple of the guys may be a little bit limited, but I don’t anticipate any big roster or gameday active difference from last week, other than of course Peyton Hills who looks good.  He was out there today in the walkthrough and he’s ready to practice.  Tennessee Titans, the more you watch them I think the more you gain respect for what they are as a team.  They’re playing outstanding team defense right now, they’ve got talented players over there. Offensively, they’ve got a veteran quarterback in a new setting who is playing extremely well. They’ve got an outstanding running back that hasn’t had a chance to do some of the things I know he’s capable of doing. They’ve got receivers that can make plays, they’re offensive line is playing well, they haven’t given up many sacks. They’ve got a Pro Bowl returner and very good special teams, which is typical of a team that’s playing good defense, typically, your special teams follow in line.  We’re pretty well aware of what they are as a team, now we have to get a plan together to try and go out and beat them.”

Transcript from news conference with Browns coach Pat Shurmur

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 26, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters this afternoon. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement) - “Good afternoon.  I’ll start out with injuries to the best of my knowledge here.  Sheldon Brown had a groin strain yesterday and we’ll go through the week and see how he does.  Chris Gocong also strained his groin, but he stayed in there.  Joshua Cribbs played the game and his groin is no worse for wear. I think he’s doing alright.  Peyton Hillis is continuing to get better from his strep throat.  Joe Thomas has a little bit of a knee strain, but our understanding is that he’ll be fine.  I just want you to be aware of that in case you see him a little bit limited early in the week.  The others guys, Titus Brown and Eric Hagg, will do more in practice this week, they’re continuing to improve.  Mohamed (Massaquoi) got through the game no worse for wear with his foot and then Tony Pashos will make an effort to come back even stronger than he did last week in terms of getting reps earlier in the week.  Then we have another list of guys here with just bumps and bruises. Phil Taylor’s knee is fine, so he’ll be fine.  I know he received some attention during the game, but I think he only missed two plays and then came back in so I think he’ll be fine.  Otherwise, I really don’t have much to add to what I said last night.  When I looked at the tape this morning and we as coaches evaluated it, there are a lot of things in there that we can do better.  I do feel like defensively we did a nice job on defense keeping the game close until the offense found a way to move the ball and get some points. That’s a good thing.  We got sacks, we disrupted the quarterback, there weren’t any long runs and at the end of the game when we needed a stop, after spotting the team 30 yards with a field goal to win it, they did a tremendous job of getting it to fourth-and-10 and then finishing the game with an interception.  I have to credit them, Dick Jauron and those guys do a terrific job in getting those guys ready.  I thought special teams the effort was sound. We made our kicks, we got our points, but I think there were some areas in there that we can get better.”

As I mentioned earlier in the week, he was trying to do more and he did do more.  We haven’t ruled him out for the game yet, but we’re just going to have to sit down and finally decide.  As soon as we make that decision we’ll find a way to get it to you.  Other than that, it was a good practice. I wish we could have stayed outside, but that’s what the indoor facility is for, when the weather gets bad.”

We’re trying to recreate the same preparation and even make it better than we had last Wednesday and our opponent is the Miami Dolphins.  As I mentioned yesterday, I really think that they’re a very, very good team.  You have to overlook their start.  You have a lot of teams in the league that are either 1-1 or there are some 0-2 teams that I think are fantastic teams so we’re going to have to play our best ball to beat them and that’s where we’re at preparation wise.  Beyond that, there’s nothing new to add injury wise.  If you have a specific question about a guy, I’ll answer it.  Tony Pashos is going to try and come back and be ready to roll and we have Titus Brown and Eric Hagg who are continuing to make progress.  Those are the three injured scratches we had last week.  Other than that, I think we pretty much have everybody else.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters Monday following the team's 27-19 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement) - “Good afternoon.  I really don’t have much to add about the game to what I talked about after the game.  I feel like watching both games from the sideline, I saw basically the same thing when I watched the tape.  I felt like we made improvements as a team.  I think we went through and made an effort to correct some mistakes that we made in the first game and I think it showed up yesterday.  There were a lot fewer penalties and I wouldn’t call them hostile environments, I just think you consider them away environments where noise can be a factor when you’re playing offense. I thought we did a better job there.  I think defensively, we played a very, very strong game.  There are a lot of things that you can point to.  I think the defensive line as a unit played very well, I think our linebackers covered well and again, in the secondary, I think we challenged.  There were some real good things to build on and keep in mind that this is a sport that as you go through the season you try to find ways to improve each week as you work on your next opponent. I feel like that’s the direction we’ll go.  I said last night I think offensively it was a fairly efficient game.  We put the ball on the ground once, which we can’t do and I think that’s something that we’ll continue to work on.  Can’t turn the ball over, but for the most part, if you’re going to play offense against a team like the Colts you have to be willing to take six, seven, eight yard gains and do it consistently.”

Browns arrive in Indianapolis after bizarre delay

The Browns have arrived in Indianapolis this evening after their flight out of Cleveland Hopkins Airport was delayed for a few hours. They're scheduled to face the Colts at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Wide receiver Josh Cribbs chronicled the odd start to the Browns' first road trip of the 2011 regular season through Twitter. Per Cribbs, the team's plane was stuck in mud as it tried to maneuver on the runway. After the plane was pulled out of the mud, the team switched to another plane and eventually took off. The trip ended on a high note when a group of Browns fans greeted the players as they arrived at their hotel.

(Opening statement)- “Good morning. As you’ve seen, we had a couple of roster moves.  We lost Eddie Williams, he went to Seattle, and then Quinn Porter went to the Rams.  We signed Will Ta’ufo’ou and Xavier Omon, both to our practice squad.  It’s the first day of preparation for the players as we get ready for Indianapolis, a team in the last two years that has won 12 games each year.  A lot has been talked about with the loss of Peyton Manning, but they’re an extremely talented team on offense that’s now being quarterbacked by a very veteran guy that’s won a lot of games.  When I watch them on offense I see a team, regardless of who the quarterback is you see a lot of the same principles offensively that they’re famous for running in terms of their run game, their pass concepts and I would assume that Kerry Collins will be one week better executing their offense.  Defensively, they’re a Tampa-two style that plays a lot of three deep.  They are very fast and a team that you have to take care of the two defensive ends.  That’s where it starts in terms of their pass rush.  Again, they’re a very fast team and if they get you in a situation where its pass all the time, that’s where they become very dangerous.  It’s an opponent that we’re obviously taking very seriously.  Preparation is all ready going fast and furious.”

I actually saw some things on the tape, some guys that were in there for the first time, young guys that played well and competed.  To go back on it, we started out extremely slow.  We had a very, very, very poor offensive first quarter if you think about it, penalties, you get yourself behind in third down situations, you have third and longs.  Our third and shorter situations we did a decent job.  You hurt yourself on third down by what you do on first and second down in some cases.  The punting added to it early.  Basically what happened was is we played a first quarter and we’re down 13-0, then we found a way before half to go up 14-13, which to me shows that these guys have some resilience, know how to fight back, know how to get their focus and get the lead.  At halftime we come out and we stop them and we go down and score, which is okay, they understand the message at halftime that we’re going out and trying to start fast.  Then we hit a little spot in there where it was just back and forth, back and forth.  The play everybody’s focusing on is the one where they quick snapped us and they made a play.  I’m sure you’ll have questions about that, but then after that there was a lot of game left.  It’s a three-point game so you just have to go out and play.  Eventually that gets treated like it was a contested ball that they threw in the end zone for whatever reason and you go on and play, but there’s stuff we can learn from the play we just discussed.  We just didn’t get it done.  When I look back on it, at least I thought Jason Pinkston for a rookie did a heck of a good job at left guard.  We had a little rotation at right tackle and we’ll keep working there.  Then there are things within the game, there were a lot of guys on defense that competed well.  You saw Josh Cribbs, that kickoff return jump started us and that punt return had a chance at the end there to go the distance.  There were some good things there.  There were parts of the game I thought Colt (McCoy) played very well.  That’s what we’re building on.  Once we get through this press conference, the guys right now are just finishing up some tape.  I have a 24-hour rule win, lose or draw we play this thing out, we do the corrections and then we move on to the Indianapolis Colts.  That’s the focus.”

Transcript from news conference with Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 8, 2011

Browns defensive coordinator Dick Jauron met with reporters today. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(On the rookies’ progression on the defensive line)- “They are obviously further along than they were about five and a half six weeks ago.  It’s hard to play in there and I think it’s a little bit easier maybe for Jabaal (Sheard) to play outside, not that it’s ever easy, but inside Phil’s (Taylor) got people on both sides of him.  A lot of things are going on in there, but they are both doing fine.  We are really happy with both of their progress.  They have a lot to learn obviously.  I think they are quick studies, I believe that they are.  They work at it, they like it and they are serious about it.  So here we go, it will be a great learning experience for them and I believe they will do a good job.”

(Opening statement)- “It is game week and we just had our first walk-through of the week, although we’ve basically had two other practices where we’ve had a chance to work on things somewhat specific to the Bengals.  I don’t think we are any different than most teams in terms of the time we’ve spent since we’ve finalized our team.  We’ve had one last change, Tyler Clutts went to the Chicago Bears on their 53-man roster and we signed a fullback, Eddie Williams, to replace him on the practice squad.”

(Opening statement)- “The first day after a major cut down of the roster is a hard time for coaches, it’s hard time for players, but they came out here today and I think we got a lot accomplished.  We went in pads, I felt like it was important that we carry the pads.  We had what we call 10-10-10 practice, where we work through the general principles and concepts that we’ve been running as we approach the Bengal game.  I felt like we got great work.  There are a lot of new faces out here in terms of guys that have been a little bit hampered by injuries during training camp so it was good.  I think we all got good work.  I’m glad that it’s a very hot day, very humid day.  I think the players will benefit from that.”

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters Thursday night following his team's preseason finale against the Chicago Bears. Here is the transcript from the news conference:

Opening Statement: “Basically, this was an opportunity for a lot of young guys to play. I think that some guys did some good things, and then there were some other guys who will look back on this and wish they played better. That’s a little bit of what this is, is you go through the preseason and obviously everything you do is important. You want a good performance every time you play. But there are moments and stretches during training camp where young guys get an opportunity, and the ones that shine have the opportunity to stay around, do some things and develop.”
