Observations from Browns training camp: first practice, Aug. 17, 2010

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 17, 2010

The Browns practice twice today, once from 8:45-10:45 a.m. and once from 5:45-7:45 p.m. Here are my observations from the morning session:

  • The right side of the offensive line had a much different look this morning. Tony Pashos and John St. Clair, both of whom have worked at right tackle during training camp, were sidelined. Meanwhile, rookie right guard Shawn Lauvao was excused from practice for a personal reason, Browns coach Eric Mangini said.

  • Because of the aforementioned absences, Billy Yates (right guard) and Scott Kooistra (right tackle) practiced with the first-team offense. Pat Murray also rotated with Yates at right guard, but Yates received the majority of the reps with the No. 1 unit.

  • Marcus Benard played with the first-team defense. He lined up on the outside. Scott Fujita and Chris Gocong were on the inside, and Matt Roth was the other outside linebacker. Eric Barton, who filled in at inside linebacker after D'Qwell Jackson was sidelined with an injury, worked with the second-team defense.

  • Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy returned to action after sitting out during Monday's practice with a sprained right thumb.

  • Linebacker David Veikune practiced for the second consecutive day after missing time last week.

  • Running back Peyton Hillis practiced after walking off the field Monday and not returning.

  • Running back James Davis remained sidelined. Other players who sat out Tuesday morning were cornerback Brandon McDonald, linebacker David Bowens, wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, defensive back Coye Francies and defensive linemen Shaun Rogers, Titus Adams and C.J. Mosley. Running back Montario Hardesty is still out, too. Of course, D'Qwell Jackson is expected to miss three to eight weeks with a pectoral strain, and punter Dave Zastudil is out for the season after being placed on injured reserve.

  • Defensive back DeAngelo Smith broke up a pass from quarterback Brett Ratliff during a seven-on-seven session.

  • During an 11-on-11 session, tight end Evan Moore dropped a pass from Delhomme.

  • On the next play, Moore redeemed himself. Quarterback Seneca Wallace rolled to his right and hit Moore with a pass for about a 20-yard gain.

  • Rookie safety T.J. Ward broke up a pass from Ratliff that was intended for wide receiver Syndric Steptoe.

  • Linebacker Titus Brown ran a lap as punishment for getting into a minor scuffle with running back Chris Jennings.

  • Wide receiver Jake Allen imitated what Moore did earlier. He dropped a pass from Seneca Wallace before catching a pass from Wallace on the next play. Allen fell out of bounds as he hauled in the pass from Wallace along the sideline.

  • Cornerback Sheldon Brown intercepted a short pass from Delhomme. Josh Cribbs was the intended receiver.

  • Linebacker Jason Trusnik batted down a pass from Wallace near the line of scrimmage.

  • Defensive back Chris Chancellor was called for pass interference while covering wide receiver Carlton Mitchell on a deep pass from Wallace.
