This evening's Browns practice was the final session that will be open to the public in 2010. Here are my observations from the practice:
Offensive lineman John St. Clair and wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi returned to practice after missing time earlier this week. Wide receiver Carlton Mitchell and defensive back Gerard Lawson returned after walking off the field in this morning with minor injuries.
Offensive lineman Tony Pashos remained sidelined despite Browns coach Eric Mangini saying that he expected Pashos to return to action in the afternoon. Pashos worked out on an exercise bike at the beginning of practice and walked into the team's indoor facility.
Other players who were still sidelined: Defensive linemen Shaun Rogers, C.J. Mosley and Titus Adams, defensive back Coye Francies, linebackers David Bowens, D'Qwell Jackson, offensive linemen Floyd Womack and Shawn Lauvao, running back Montario Hardesty and punter Dave Zastudil.
In a seven-on-seven drill, cornerback Brandon McDonald broke up a pass thrown by quarterback Jake Delhomme, linebacker Blake Costanzo broke up a pass thrown by quarterback Seneca Wallace and cornerback Eric Wright tipped a pass thrown by quarterback Brett Ratliff.
In an 11-on-11 red zone drill, Delhomme threw a short touchdown pass over the middle to wide receiver Chansi Stuckey.
In a goal-line situation, running back Peyton Hillis flattened defensive back Ray Ventrone, even though the players were wearing shorts, shoulder pads and helmets.
Playing quarterback for the scout-team offense (simulating the St. Louis Rams' offense), rookie quarterback Colt McCoy hit tight end Joel Gamble and wide receiver Jake Allen with touchdown passes.
Rookie cornerback Joe Haden broke up a pass.
Tight end Evan Moore jumped and dropped a pass from Wallace. The next play, Moore jumped again and caught a pass from Wallace.
Haden broke up another pass, this time from Delhomme and intended for wide receiver Brian Robiskie.
Cornerback Sheldon Brown recorded an interception. McCoy made the throw.
Playing for the scout-team offense, Hillis caught a touchdown pass over the middle and dunked the ball through the uprights.
In other moments of triumph for the scout-team offense, Ratliff completed touchdown passes to wide receiver Syndric Steptoe and Allen.
