The Browns are among the teams that have had very preliminary discussions with the St. Louis Rams about trading up for the No. 2 pick in this year's draft, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported early Tuesday morning.

Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III would be the presumed target for teams trying to make the move.

Browns General Manager Tom Heckert did not attend the NFL Scouting Combine because he is recovering from heart surgery, President Mike Holmgren said this afternoon.

"He had heart surgery," Holmgren said. "He's gonna be fine. Actually, he's a very healthy guy now. He had a blockage in an artery. They found it, they went, they fixed it. But it lays him up for a while. This was done a couple weeks ago.

The Browns have signed middle linebacker D'Qwell Jackson to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced today.

Browns President Mike Holmgren and Jackson are scheduled to meet with media at 3 p.m. today at the team's headquarters in Berea.

Virginia cornerback Chase Minnifield talked to reporters this afternoon at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Minnifield is the son of Frank Minnifield, who played cornerback for the Browns from 1984-92 and made four Pro Bowls. The elder Minnifield and Hanford Dixon formed one of the best cornerback tandems in NFL history. Chase Minnifield said he has not met with the Browns at the combine, but he discussed his father's legacy and ties to the team as well as his own goals. What is the best advice your dad gave you?: “I got advice every day. Just don’t let people outwork you. His work ethic was passed down to me. I’m a big believer in you get out the work you put into it. My dad was a walk-on that turned into a four-time Pro Bowler. He’s a big-time, hard-working guy, and that’s what I’ve been. That’s what he passed down to me.”

The Browns will try to re-sign defensive end Marcus Benard, even if they don't offer him a restricted free-agent tender, a league source said.

Pro Football Talk reported this morning that the Browns don't plan to make Benard a tender offer. However, the source told the Beacon Journal "nothing is set in stone on that."

Browns General Manager Tom Heckert is missing the NFL Scouting Combine because he is recovering from a major surgery, Mike Trivisonno reported today on the team's flagship station, WTAM (1100-AM).

On Thursday, the Browns cited an illness when explaining Heckert's absence from the combine, which runs through Tuesday.

Baylor listed Griffin, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, as 6 feet, 2 inches and 220 pounds, and several draft gurus thought Griffin's height could be a concern if he was shorter than advertised. But Griffin's official measurement should only help his draft stock.

"He's fine," Browns coach Pat Shurmur said this evening when he spoke with reporters at the combine. "I talked to him a couple times today. He's fine. He just didn't travel here."
