Cleveland Browns

Saturday PM Aug. 1

With the extensive renovation in Berea, the Browns may as well have added a running track around the practice field. The second practice of training camp turned into a lap-fest.

Among those making mistakes that drew coach Eric Mangini's penalty were defensive linemen Shaun Rogers, Corey Williams and Melila Purcell (who did two), quarterback Brady Quinn and quarterback Derek Anderson and rookie center Alex Mack (for a botched exchange).

Pro Bowler Rogers had his own unique style, almost like a race-walker.

That rash of mistakes was in stark contrast to the morning session, when the offense looked sharp and only Mack and receiver Lance Leggett did laps.

QB update: Brady Quinn showed improvement on his long throws, especially on a touchdown bomb to Leggett in one-on-one drills.

Play of the night: Rookie running back James Davis, a sixth-round pick from Clemson, took a pitchout, scooted around the left end and broke free for a long touchdown run.

RB battle: If he's trying to unseat incumbent Jamal Lewis, Jerome Harrison didn't help himself by dropping a short pass from Quinn in team drills. Lewis got quite a bit of action on inside runs.

Defensive gem: Cornerback Brandon McDonald had a nice breakup of a Quinn pass for Leggett during team drills.

Tight ends busy: With much of the emphasis on ball control, tight ends Robert Royal, Aaron Walker, Martin Rucker and John Madsen were frequent targets.
