Thursday Aug. 20: Purcell hurt, Leonard hot

By Marla Ridenour Published: August 20, 2009

Defensive lineman Melila Purcell, a sixth-round pick in 2007 out of Hawaii, appeared to suffer a serious leg injury on a running play during scout team drills.

Purcell could not get up and grabbed his left ankle. He had to be taken off on a cart and could not put weight on his foot.

A first-year player in terms of service because he has never played in a game, the native of American Samoa spent the past two seasons on the practice squad.

Leonard draws ire: Defensive lineman Louis Leonard and defensive line coach Bryan Cox clashed during the middle of practice when Leonard apparently mouthed off to Cox.

''Don't you curse at me,'' Cox said. Then Cox sent Leonard off to run laps and told him, ''Don't come back until I tell you to.'' Leonard took his time, which prompted Cox to yell, ''Put your helmet on and keep going. Don't walk, I said run.''

While he jogged, Leonard said he worked on his hand moves.

Leonard did three long laps before rejoining the linemen at the blocking dummies.

After practice, Leonard came out to answer reporters' questions about the incident.

''You know, just a heated practice,'' Leonard said. ''It was what it was. I'm a player and he's a coach and I abide by the rules.

''I'm sure you all were probably counting. I lost count at three. It probably was the record.''

Leonard had nothing but good things to say about the ultra-intense Cox, who played linebacker for 12 seasons in the NFL with Miami, Chicago, the New York Jets, New England and New Orleans.

''He just wants you to work hard, he wants to bring the best out of you,'' Leonard said. ''It might get rough sometimes. But he's a good coach and if you pay attention to him, you'll learn a lot. I've been learning a lot since I've been coached by him. I'm glad to have him and I'm glad to be one of his players.''

Defensive lineman Shaun Smith was released Aug. 8 after an altercation with Cox, but he had been on thin ice with the staff before that, reportedly told in the off-season to ''shape up and shut up.''

Roster move: Offensive lineman Brandon Braxton and receiver Edward Williams were waived and guard Pat Murray and linebacker Robert McCune were signed.

Who's not practicing: Shaun Rogers, David Patten, Jerome Harrison, David Bowens.

Who's back: Ryan Tucker, Paul Hubbard.

Johnson won't play vs. Browns: Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson will sit out Saturday night's game against Cleveland, Detroit coach Jim Schwartz announced Thursday. Johnson, who has a splint on his sprained thumb, hopes to return in preseason Game 3 against the Colts.

Does this sound familiar? Schwartz wouldn't reveal his planned quarterback rotation for the Browns game. He will divide up the snaps between Daunte Culpepper, rookie Matthew Stafford and Drew Stanton.

Like the Browns' Eric Mangini, Schwartz has no timetable on when to announce his regular-season starter.

''We’re trying not to rush to things; let’s be objective with it,'' Schwartz said, according to ''I’ve seen some other coaches around say, ‘Hey, we’re making a decision after the second game or whatever.' I don’t know if that’s the strategy that I would take.''
