Transcript from news conference with Browns coach Pat Shurmur

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 30, 2011

Browns coach Pat Shurmur met with reporters today after practice. Here is a transcript from the news conference:

(Opening statement)- “I think that was as many guys as we’ve had practice on a Friday.  I thought that it was a fast practice, everybody seemed to be on point.  Tony Pashos went through it and unless something sets him back here in the next day or so he’ll probably play and start.”

(On what Pashos does for them on the right side of the offensive line)- “He’s an old pro, I think he gives us some size and actually does a nice job of pass protection as well.  I’m not used to seeing him in there playing much other than the preseason snaps so I’m looking forward to seeing him work.”

(On if his play calling will change now that he has his starter back at right tackle)- “No, I don’t think so.  Typically, changes on the offensive line don’t change things much.  Who we’re playing against and the matchups on defense might, but the fact that he’s back, we’ll probably keep it the same.”

(On if preparing for Chris Johnson is similar to preparing for Reggie Bush)- “I think they’re very similar in that if they get the ball in their hands and they get turned going forward they can change the game, they both can score.  There are some similarities in their running styles, but again you have to really practice the run schemes that Tennessee uses as appose to what Miami did, which was a little bit different.  Miami was a little bit more downhill, these guys are more of an off tackle, zone team.”

(On if Mike Holmgren has been instrumental in helping him scout Matt Hasselbeck)- “I’ve talked to coach (Holmgren) about Matt at other times.  We haven’t had too much conversation about that.  We’ve had some small conversations about what he’s good at and I think the important thing is we know what he is and how he’s wired from Mike’s years with him.  But, when you watch Matt you have to really watch him now in his new system and his new setting and he’s playing extremely well.”

(On if Holmgren was more involved this week than he would be with another team)- “No, I think it’s been a normal interaction.  Again, because of the familiarity with Matt, obviously, it’s more natural that we talk about it.”

(On if he had to do anything different to keep the players focused because their bye is next week)- “I’m not concerned about that.  I think the practice sessions have been good.  From what I can tell in the meetings, the meetings have been good and it appears like they’ve got themselves ready to play.  Now, they’ve got to go out and do it.  I think what’s happening next week, whether they’re off next week or we have another team next week, there’s no focus on that right now.”

(On if the passing game will be better if Colt McCoy starts off more accurate)- “I think what you’ll see then is you’re getting more completions early, you’re getting yards after catch. Because you’re getting more completions, you’re staying on the field longer and you’re getting more plays, which allows you to extend drives and all the good things that come with playing efficient football.”
