What they're saying today
-Beacon Journal (Marla Ridenour): Just enough to win -Beacon Journal (Patrick McManamon): Browns should hold noses after surviving this stinkfest -Cincinnati Enquirer (Paul Daugherty): Disarmed and dangerous -Columbus Dispatch (Scott Priestle): No lipstick for this pig -Plain Dealer (Tony Grossi): Not pretty, but precious -Plain Dealer (Bill Livingston): Against lowly Bengals, Browns overcome faltering offense, inflexible coach -Plain Dealer (Terry Pluto): Browns' victory should calm jumpy nerves, while some (Cowher) rumors should just fade away
-What I'm saying today: It seems like most are upset about this win. The offense still looked bad. Derek Anderson wasn't quite bad enough to bring in Brady Quinn. Josh Cribbs wanted to cry after the game. Carson Palmer wasn't playing.
It doesn't matter. The Browns won. Cheer up.
What they're saying today
• Beacon Journal (George Thomas): Browns' loss bewildering • Beacon Journal (Patrick McManamon): Season slipping away for 'pathetic' Browns • Plain Dealer (May Kay Cabot): Anderson admits starting job at risk after loss • Plain Dealer (Bradley Schlegel): Ravens relishing their Browns beatdown • Baltimore Sun (Peter Schmuck): Ravens take bad with the good • Baltimore Sun (Edward Lee): After scare, good news on Landry
What I'm saying today: Once again, I was fortunate enough to miss the game. I did DVR it, so maybe I'll watch some later this week. Seemed like another mess. There is a ton of fall out from this game. Luke will probably have some real thoughts at some point this week.
Apologies if you looked for a game preview. We've been having an issue with Word Press lately where we set a story to run and Word Press just eats it. That is what happened with the preview and in a flurry of work Sunday, I didn't even check to see if it ran. Needless to say, my prediction of another loss would have been correct.
Cleveland Browns: From the Coach
Coach Romeo Crennel had little problem calling what wide receiver Braylon Edwards is enduring currently a slump. He's more concerned, however, with getting Edwards' problems corrected. Right now the wideout has five receptions for 46 yards. Gee, think those fantasy football wonks who have him on their rosters are a bit miffed? You betcha.
Cleveland Browns: In the Locker Room
Ummm...sure the Northeast Ohio Browns media were in the locker room this afternoon, but it resembled something out of an episode of The X-Files. Many players were mysteriously missing. Yes, we know that the problem lies in the fact that they lost this past Sunday, but as one person in the room observed: "You're here when you win and you want the love; where are you when you lose and it's not going to be as easy?"
Indeed. But props to those who came around to talk.

Achilles injury for Robaire
Browns defensive end Robaire Smith suffered a potentially season-ending Achilles tendon injury in Sunday night's 10-6 loss to Pittsburgh.
At his Monday press conference, coach Romeo Crennel said what was thought to be an ankle injury for Smith turned out to be an Achilles. But Crennel did not give an estimate of how long Smith would be out or whether he would need surgery.

Steelers post-mortem
After dropping a 10-6 loss to Pittsburgh Sunday night, Cleveland will try to become one of 19 teams since 1990 to rebound from an 0-2 start to make the playoffs. After facing two of the top teams in the league in Dallas and Pittsburgh, the Browns hit the road against AFC North foes Baltimore (1-0) and Cincinnati (0-2).
''It's not really no hole,'' defensive lineman Shaun Smith said. ''The Giants started out 0-2 last year and won the Super Bowl. We're that caliber-type of team. I feel like we're a good team and we're just trying to get over the hump.''

What they're saying today
- Beacon Journal (Marla Ridenour): Frustrated once again - Beacon Journal (Patrick McManamon): Decisions defy logic, deliver Browns defeat - Beacon Journal (George Thomas): Browns spread blame around among selves - Canton Repository (Steve Doerschuk): Browns' defense does job, offense doesn't - Columbus Dispatch (Aaron Portzline): Crennel's late-half decisions hurt Browns in loss - Plain Dealer (Bud Shaw): Beat the Steelers? Here's a novel idea, how about the Browns keep from beating themselves? - Plain Dealer (Terry Pluto): Scribbles: Bad combination can't unlock offense - Post-Gazette (Ed Bouchette): Steelers take early division advantage
What I'm saying today: I didn't get to watch the game live, but DVR'd it. The game was dull and I fell asleep by the end of the first half. (Hey, waking up at 6 a.m. does that to you.) From what I did see, a lot of the first half problems again stem from the fact that Braylon Edwards isn't catching the ball. He dropped three catchable passes that would have continued drives. If he can't get things together, and quick, the offense will continue to sputter.
On the plus side, Shaun Rogers and Brodney Pool played pretty well. They may have stunk it up in the second half, though. I don't know. Luke may or may not have more thoughts on the game at some point.
Cleveland Browns: In the Locker Room
'Just Another Game'
Is this what free agency have wrought? A couple of media members did a double take in the Browns locker room when Shaun Smith downplayed the importance of this Sunday night's Browns-Steelers game that's being televised nationally on NBC (WKYC Channel 3)
Cleveland Browns: In the Coach's Office
- Browns Coach Romeo Crennel has always struck me like a bear in appearance and demeanor. With respect to the latter, he only growls when necessary and in private. But that hibernation-like demeanor kind of leaves me wondering whether he can ultimately hang on to the confidence of his players.
Take today's press conference for instance:
Jones to have 'scope
Browns coach Romeo Crennel announced Wednesday that strong safety Sean Jones will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday.
Crennel said Jones' knee, which experienced swelling in training camp that kept him out of two preseason games, flared up again after Sunday's season-opening loss to Dallas.

What they're saying today
- Akron Beacon Journal: Browns off to a bad start - ABJ's Patrick McManamon: Browns plummet to depths that defy defense - Canton Repository (Todd Porter): Another opener and yet another Browns stinker - Plain Dealer (Bud Shaw): There's no defense for Browns' drab debut --- then again, there was no defense at all - Plain Dealer (Terry Pluto): Scribbles on Braylon's bobbles, defensive futility and Crennel's pointless field goal - Columbus Dispatch: Brought back to earth - Dallas Morning News (Jean-Jacques Taylor): Cowboys' offense shows no mercy for an overmatched Browns defense
What I'm saying: The most glaring problem from this game was Derek Anderson not completing a single pass the entire third quarter. That's bothersome. Kellen Winslow, who had four catches in the first half, only had one catch the entire second half. At least we didn't have to watch the Bengals.
Luke may or may not have more thoughts on the game at some point. For now, see reactions from Romeo Crennel and Derek Anderson. Or, see a photo gallery.

Sanders moves up
Sunday should be special for Cleveland native Steve Sanders, an East High School product who dreams of becoming his city's major one day. On Saturday, the receiver was promoted from the practice squad to the avtive roster and rookie receiver Paul Hubbard was waived.
If Hubbard clears waivers, the sixth-round draft choice from Wisconsin could be added to the practice squad. A track star in college, Hubbard walked on the Badgers' football team in 2003 and was red-shirted. While he showed his speed in Cleveland's winless preseason, he lacked consistency catching the football, dropping a touchdown in the finale against Chicago.

Ready if needed
If Browns running back Jamal Lewis can't play Sunday against Dallas because of a hamstring injury, coach Romeo Crennel said Jason Wright and Jerome Harrison will share the load.
Lewis was hurt Aug. 18 against the New York Giants, running downfield after a fumbled exchange with quarterback Derek Anderson was returned 95 yards for a touchdown.

Peek blows out his knee
Browns coach Romeo Crennel said five-year veteran outside linebacker Antwan Peek blew out his right knee in practice Wednesday.
Crennel said, ''It looks like the patellar tendon,'' an injury that also befell center LeCharles Bentley and cornerback Gary Baxter while with the Browns. Both are currently out of football.
