Game day blog: Browns at Baltimore Ravens (Week 3)

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 26, 2010

Final recap -- Ravens 24, Browns 17 (click here for the box score)

The Browns flirted with pulling off a huge upset in their first AFC North game of the season, but the Baltimore Ravens refused to let their home opener be spoiled in front of 71,119 fans Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium. The Browns (0-3) eliminated their most glaring problem from their first two games -- turnovers -- but still lost. They can't even use penalties as an excuse this time because their eight for 60 yards was matched by the Ravens (2-1). And in a new twist, the Browns actually scored in the second half. Improving in all those areas, plus a superb effort from running back Peyton Hillis (22 carries for a career-high 144 yards rushing, including a 1-yard touchdown) and a solid performance from quarterback Seneca Wallace (18-of-24 passing for 141 yards and a touchdown), kept Cleveland in contention for nearly the entire game. The Browns even gained a 17-14 lead  and held it until wide receiver Anquan Boldin caught the go-ahead touchdown, his third of the day, from quarterback Joe Flacco with 9:13 left in the fourth quarter. In the Browns' first two games of the season, the defense had been the team's strength while the offense struggled. This time, though, the defense, and specifically cornerback Eric Wright, had no answer for Boldin, who finished with eight catches for 142 yards. Boldin caught a high pass over Wright for his first touchdown (8 yards). He caught his second one (12 yards) when Wright was caught out of position in the end zone. Finally, he burned Wright for the ultimate dagger, a catch in stride in the back of the end zone. This might go down as Wright's worst performance as a professional. He's supposed to be one of the Browns' best defensive players, but he appeared to be confused, slow and completely overmatched. In the end, Boldin's dominance and the Browns' missed opportunities overshadowed the strides made by Cleveland's offense. Here are some of the Browns' notable missed opportunities in chronological order: 1. Rookie safety T.J. Ward nearly intercepted Flacco's first pass of the game, but Ward said he dropped the ball because he got too excited as thoughts of a pick-six rushed through his head. 2. The Browns became the first team to score a touchdown against the Ravens this season, trimming their deficit to 14-10 when Hillis ran off the left side for a 1-yard score with 13 seconds left in the second quarter. They got the ball back to start the second half, but instead of using the momentum they had gained to their advantage, Wallace was sacked twice -- first by linebacker Terrell Suggs for no gain and then by safety Dawan Landry for a loss of 10 yards. The Browns had to punt after those lapses. 3. After the Browns took a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter, they couldn't stop the Ravens from countering with a 10-play, 69-yard scoring drive. On third-and-13 from Cleveland's 46-yard line, Flacco hit tight end Todd Heap with a 14-yard pass that Browns defensive back Mike Adams said he thought he had knocked away from Heap. Three plays later, the Ravens took the lead with Boldin's third touchdown catch. 4. During the first play from scrimmage of the ensuing drive, Wallace pitched the ball while Hillis was expecting a handoff. Wallace recovered the fumble, but the Browns went from first-and-10 at their own 20 to second-and-27 at their own 3. They couldn't generate any offense and had to punt. 5. The Browns got the ball back with 5:29 left, but they went three-and-out. On third-and-2, Wallace's deep pass to Cribbs fell incomplete, the Browns had to punt, and they never got the ball back.

Question of the day

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 24, 2010

John used this blog's submission form to e-mail me the following question: "What does it truly mean to be 'on the practice squad' anyway. ... Are they truly in uniform and out their practicing with the regulars on game weeks? I can't imagine they get many reps, or that any coaches have much time for them. No? Is it like the NBA having 15-man rosters but only 12 active for games? Is it really just an inactive list?"

Game day blog: Kansas City Chiefs at Browns (Week 2)

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 19, 2010

Final recap -- Chiefs 16, Browns 14 (click here for the box score)

The Browns can't stop beating themselves, and it's tough to watch. Just like in Week 1, Cleveland led 14-10 at halftime after basically giving its opponent points, only to fall in the end. This time, the Browns virtually spotted the Chiefs 10 points when quarterback Seneca Wallace threw an interception that was returned 33 yards for a touchdown by Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers. Jerome Harrison's lost fumble set up Ryan Succop's 35-yard field goal that gave the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. Then in the second half, the Browns experienced deja vu again by failing to score after halftime. Different quarterback, same story. With Jake Delhomme sidelined because of an ankle injury, Wallace became the 15th starting quarterback for the Browns since their expansion era began in 1999. He completed 16-of-31 attempts for 229 yards and one touchdown with an interception. Sure, Delhomme had two interceptions against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1, but the results were ultimately the same with Wallace controlling the offense. Meanwhile, Harrison had 16 carries for 33 yards (2.1 average) and no touchdowns. Remember when he ran for a franchise-record 286 yards with three touchdowns against the Chiefs last season. What happened? Chalk it up to Romeo Crennel's revenge. The former Browns coach had his new defense ready to play, and Harrison was never a factor. Speaking of no impact, the Browns' starting wide receivers -- Mohamed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie -- had one catch apiece. Of course, Wallace connected with Josh Cribbs for a 65-yard touchdown pass and Peyton Hillis (eight carries for 35 yards) ran for a 1-yard score, but it really was a dismal day the Browns' offense, which gained only 51 yards after halftime after compiling 244 in the first two quarters . If you're looking for some good news, the Browns didn't have to scrap their plan to let rookie quarterback Colt McCoy watch and learn from the sidelines. After all, an injury from Wallace would have forced them to play McCoy. On another positive note, the Browns' defense did not allow a touchdown. Linebacker Marcus Benard had a sack, defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin had six tackles and a diving interception off a tipped pass by linebacker Matt Roth and cornerback Sheldon Brown made a leaping pick of his own. Also, rookie safety T.J. Ward led the Browns in tackles for the second week in a row, this time with nine. Ward and rookie cornerback Joe Haden played extremely well as members of the Browns' punt and kickoff coverage units. But the Chiefs did what they needed to do on special teams, too: For the most part, they took Cribbs out of the game as a returner. He had only one kickoff return for 19 yards and one punt return for 5 yards. Last season against the Chiefs (2-0), Cribbs had kickoff returns of 100 and 103 yards for touchdowns. Not this time. The Chiefs' coaching staff won the chess match, and their players executed at a higher level. The Browns are 0-2 as a result.

The Browns selected Hardesty in the second round (59th overall) of this year's draft. They traded a third-round pick and two fifth-round selections so they could move up in the draft and take him.

Game day blog: Chicago Bears at Browns (fourth preseason game)

By Nate Ulrich Published: September 2, 2010

The Browns host the Chicago Bears in the 2010 preseason finale for both teams. The Browns' top two quarterbacks -- Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace -- won't play and neither will Bears starting quarterback Jay Cutler. Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy was announced as the expected starting quarterback for the Browns about an hour before kickoff. Todd Collins will start at quarterback for the Bears. Most of the other starters from both teams will likely receive little playing time if any at all. So tonight will mostly serve as an opportunity for lower-profile players to compete for roster spots. NFL teams must trim their 75-man rosters to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday. Pay close attention to special teams tonight. Several players on the proverbial bubble know they must impress on special teams to earn jobs. Tonight's game won't start until 8 p.m., and I have an 11:20 p.m. deadline. In other words, bear with me when it comes to online updates. They won't be as frequent throughout the game, but I promise to provide a recap in this space about an hour after the game is over. The good news? This won't be an issue during the regular season. All the Browns' 2010 regular-season games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., so I'll be able to write for the web and the newspaper with time to spare. Trust me when I say I'm looking forward to that.

Final recap (postgame quotes included because they didn't make the print edition)
