Here's what Browns coach Mike Pettine is saying after practice

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 31, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine met with reporters Monday after practice. Below is a transcript provided by the team.

On if the Browns need to bring in another RB: “For the immediate future for this week, we are not. We will wait and see. (RB) Duke (Johnson Jr.) was obviously out today. We should get word [on his status]. We will wait and see where we are with it.”

On if he has an idea of the severity of RB Duke Johnson Jr.’s concussion: “No.”

On if RB Shaun Draughn is progressing from his hand injury and if he can now handle the ball: “He is. He handled it some today. The further he gets along, the more they can remove from the cast. He will get to the point where he will just have a protective covering on it and not a cast. There is a chance, even Thursday night, that he will handle the ball some.”

Here's what Browns coach Mike Pettine is saying Sunday

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 30, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine spoke to reporters Sunday during a conference call. Below is a transcript provided by the team.

On RB Duke Johnson Jr.’s status: “No update there. He will be in the league’s concussion protocol. We will know more as the week goes along.”

On if yesterday’s game went as well as the Browns could have hoped, excluding injuries: “Yeah, there were a lot of positives. A lot more positives than negatives. The negatives were still there. The injury stuff, like you said, is a little concerning. Overall, we accomplished what we wanted to. We went down there and came out of it a better football team. We put a lot of good things on tape. There are also a lot of situations that came up that are good teachable moments.”

On if he feels good about personnel at RB: “Yeah, getting (RB) Shaun (Draughn) back certainly helps. He did take some special teams reps last night. We will wait and see how long Duke is potentially out. We have a whole series of meetings this afternoon. We will start with the (defense) first and then we will get to the offense, and the running back will likely be one of the first topics discussed.”

Browns' Terrelle Pyor, Nate Orchard to sit out with injuries in third preseason game Saturday night

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 29, 2015

Wide receiver Terrelle Pryor and rookie outside linebacker Nate Orchard won't play for the Browns when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium.

Pryor is a scratch because of the hamstring injury he's been dealing with throughout training camp. He practiced Wednesday and Thursday, but described his situation as "iffy."

So Pryor will have one last chance to get on the field this preseason and show he deserves a roster spot. The Browns will visit the Chicago Bears on Thursday night for the exhibition finale.

Orchard, a second-round pick in this year's draft, is out with an injured back, a team spokesman said. Orchard missed practice Sunday for a personal reason, but he returned the next day and practiced the rest of the week.

Browns coach Mike Pettine says Johnny Manziel likely out for rest of preseason

Browns coach Mike Pettine said quarterback Johnny Manziel will definitely be sidelined Saturday night in the third exhibition game at Tampa Bay, and he'll also likely sit out the preseason finale at Chicago because of his sore right elbow.

"Given the short week and not wanting to put him out there against Chicago, I could see he'll just be down for the next two [preseason games]," Pettine said Thursday after practice.

Pettine also essentially named projected starting quarterback Josh McCown the starter for the Sept. 13 regular-season opener against the New York Jets. Pettine has called McCown "firmly" the No. 1 quarterback throughout the summer.

Browns D-lineman Phil Taylor sits out, QB Johnny Manziel continues to rest throwing arm

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 27, 2015

Browns defensive lineman Phil Taylor sat out and quarterback Johnny Manziel continued to rest his throwing arm Thursday during the half-hour period of practice open to the media.

Taylor was sidelined for the first two preseason games and limited throughout training camp as he attempts to bounce back after undergoing two surgeries last year on his right knee.

It's not known why Taylor didn't participate in the open period Thursday. He rode a stationary bike and worked out on the side along with cornerbacks K'Waun Williams (abdominal), Justin Gilbert (hip flexor) and Robert Nelson (hamstring), offensive tackle Michael Bowie (shoulder) and nose tackle Ishmaa'ily Kitchen (groin).

Manziel has been resting his right arm since Sunday because of elbow soreness. The Browns signed journeyman quarterback Pat Devlin on Thursday morning to provide depth at the position while Manziel is shut down. Devlin practiced Thursday.

Browns sign quarterback Pat Devlin, waive backup center Ryan Seymour

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 27, 2015

The Browns signed journeyman quarterback Pat Devlin and waived backup center Ryan Seymour on Thursday.

Devlin will provide depth at quarterback while backup Johnny Manziel rests his sore right elbow.

On Wednesday afternoon, coach Mike Pettine said Manziel will likely sit out the third preseason game Saturday night at Tampa Bay, leaving projected starter Josh McCown and third-stringer Thad Lewis to handle the quarterback duties against the Buccaneers.

Pettine said the Browns probably wouldn't summon a new quarterback for action in Tampa if they were to sign one this week, but he would be more likely to play in the exhibition finale Sept. 3 at Chicago. In other words, Devlin probably won't play until the last preseason game against the Bears.

Here's what Browns coach Mike Pettine is saying after practice

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 26, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine met with reporters Wednesday after practice. Below is a transcript provided by the team.

On QB Johnny Manziel’s status: “He is experiencing a little bit of soreness. It hasn’t bounced all the way back. He didn’t throw today. We are going to err on the side of caution. We will probably make a decision later today, meet with (head athletic trainer) Joe (Sheehan) and the (doctors) and get a feel for what is the next course of action at this point. Do we shut him down for the rest of the week? We will make that decision later today whether to add an extra arm. Those are all things after this I am going to head up and hash through that.”

On if Manziel went for an MRI: “He did. We didn’t think there was anything structural. This is something he has been dealing with since high school. We just wanted to confirm that there was nothing structural, and that is the case. The MRI was a positive result.”

On if this has been an issue for Manziel and if the soreness goes away with just rest: “Yes, it does. It hasn’t come back as quickly as we had hoped. Just to be cautious, we didn’t want to rush him back for a preseason game and then have it be something that is chronic throughout the season. We just felt we should be cautious with it. We will go through all those options this afternoon.”

Here's what Browns coach Mike Pettine is saying after practice

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 23, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine met with reporters Saturday after practice. Below is a transcript provided by the team.

On the jersey competition at the end of practice: “It was an end of game – we have walked through the end of game stuff a lot, but that was the first time we wanted to go in pads with it. It was a good lesson on both sides. Not giving up on offense and executing. The spike at the end to get the extra play. Defensively, that is the NFL. You could play well for the vast majority of the game, but you have to finish. That will swing the season one way or another – how we perform in those crunch time situations. We will over-practice them and simulate as many as we can out here.”

On QB Johnny Manziel feeling something in his throwing arm: “Yeah, he started to get a little sore. We will make the decision. (We) might rest him and then he has an off day coming up. I wouldn’t be surprised tomorrow if we shut him down. Just depends on how it feels.”

On if it the same soreness from a couple weeks ago: “Yes.”

Here's what Browns coach Mike Pettine is saying after practice

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 22, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine met with reporters Saturday after practice. Below is a transcript provided by the team.

On getting some of the injured players back:“It’s helpful, it’s nice. We’ll see how many of them go tomorrow. We’ve had some of the injured guys in the walk through but not sure the list that will get back out there tomorrow when we’re at it full speed in pads. When you talk about your team on paper, preseason there comes a time where you have to put that unit out there together in practice and practice together and feel that shared experience of learning the system on the field, there’s no substitute for that. It will be good to get those guys back and we’ll be much closer to the lineup that we’re going to trout out there opening day.”

On what will determine if WR Dwayne Bowe will practice tomorrow: “Everyone’s on an individual plan with the trainer, it might be he’s back but he’s only going to take x number- he’ll give us a pitch count number or yardage number. We’ll shut him down after he reached a certain threshold but everybody is different.”

On the plan for the next few practices: “For the next couple of day it will be (full speed). We’ll be off Tuesday- we’re off Tuesday because we’re breaking camp. Coming out of the off day we might do another- we’re going to meet tonight as coordinators and Coach Ricci (strength and conditioning coach Paul Ricci) to just figure out the plan of what we have for the rest of the week as far as the logistics of it. Still want to get some good work done in pads, still feel there’s stuff left to do. You start training camp with an inventory, checklist of these are all the things we want to get done in pads. We’ll review that tonight and make sure either everything’s been done or will get done in the next couple days.”

Although Browns coach Mike Pettine still won't name a starting quarterback for the Sept. 13 regular-season opener, he insisted Friday the organization still feels good about veteran journeyman Josh McCown holding the top spot on the depth chart and Johnny Manziel serving as the primary backup.

Some outsiders feel differently after Manziel performed better than McCown Thursday during an 11-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills in the second preseason game.

But Pettine doesn't want to get caught up in "Manzielmania" partly because McCown faced the Bills' starting defense and Manziel encountered second-, third- and fourth-string opponents.

“We will be very mindful of his work load, but at the same time we still gotta get him out there and see what he can do.”

“He is not guaranteed a spot, but I also wouldn’t write him off. He is still in-between. That send of urgency now is ramped up. It is a tighter window to see it. Browns running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery called out his players Sunday after practice because no one at the position has seized control of the starting job.

"How can you play and not want to be a starter?" Montgomery said after the ninth full-squad practice of training camp. "It just bothers me that guys don't want to be the lead bell-cow guy. This game gives you so much. I always talk to them about what this game gives you as a young person, but what it does for them in life and to their families. So if you want to be a backup, then be a backup. But I mean you're going to get replaced. At some point, you've got to be a starter if you want to hang around."

Montgomery didn't single out a specific player he's waiting to take the reins.

Here's what Browns coach Mike Pettine is saying after fifth practice of training camp

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 4, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine met with reporters Tuesday after the fifth full-squad practice of training camp. Below is a transcript from the team.

On WR Terrelle Pryor’s status: “I don’t think it was anything serious, but you never know. We will get an image and see where we are with it.”

On if they had Pryor throw some balls today to take advantage of his skillset: “Yeah, special plays are going to be part of our plan each week. You want to have those up so the sooner we can start working on them, the better. I am a firm believer of always having that option. It is there, you have a couple practiced and ready to go. You get into a game where there is a lull on both sides and offensively you need something to break it open; you always want to have that to go to and a guy like Terrelle certainly gives us that ability”

On the early issues DL Danny Shelton and Xavier Cooper face: “I think they are having some of it. It is just typical stuff. I think they are both where we thought they would be. It is just getting used to the speed of the game and having to process quickly the terminology and all those things. The physical part of it going against guys that are NFL sized and NFL caliber players. That is a big part of it. They are both where we thought they would be or a little bit ahead.”

Browns sign running backs Timothy Flanders, Jalen Parmele with slew of injuries at position

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 3, 2015

The Browns added reinforcements to their injury-riddled stable of running backs Monday by signing Timothy Flanders and Jalen Parmele.

The team also waived wide receiver Kevin Cone and defensive back Brandon Stephens.

The Browns needed healthy bodies at running back for training camp after rookie Duke Johnson (hamstring) and Terrance West (calf) were hurt Saturday and undrafted rookie Luke Lundy suffered a concussion Sunday. Glenn Winston (knee) reported to camp injured, so the Browns had four of their six running backs sidelined as this past weekend wrapped up.

Isaiah Crowell and Shaun Draughn were the only men in the group left standing. The players were off Monday, so Flanders and Parmele will be added to the mix when practice resumes Tuesday.

On Sunday, Browns coach Mike Pettine said it "could be a little bit" of time before Johnson is able to practice again. He expressed optimism about West possibly returning this week, maybe even Tuesday. Pettine also said he thought Winston is "close to getting back." No timetable has been given for Lundy's return, though his return will undoubtedly be determined through the league's concussion protocol.

On if the team will consider adding a RB with three currently not practicing: “Yeah, I am going to get together with (General Manager) Ray (Farmer) after this. Always when we have these breaks, we evaluate where we are from an injury standpoint and timetables of who is coming back and if we need to, add that certainly is the position that will probably be the first one discussed.”

Here's what owner Jimmy Haslam is saying about the Browns

By Nate Ulrich Published: August 1, 2015

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam met with reporters Saturday following the third full-squad practice of training camp. Below is a transcript provided by the team.

Opening statement: “Good to see you. I am not sure what Pett (Head Coach Mike Pettine) said about practice. I know he was disappointed we have a couple people banged up a little bit, a couple of running backs might be out a little bit. Good effort. It’s been good to see everybody hustling around, see the new guys and the second-year guys and also guys like (OL) Alex Mack back out here. I thought it was a good start to the first three days.”

On the team’s talent level, as well as his excitement and expectations for the season: “I think we are all excited. I will defer to (General Manager) Ray (Farmer) and Pett about comments on the talent. It looks to me like we have more football players on both offensive lines and defensive lines and all around. We drafted 12 guys, and we have 10 out there. We have some free agents that have a chance. We signed four or five free agents. I think there is no doubt we have a better team. Hopefully, they will gel. We have a challenging schedule as everyone knows, but I’m sure all 32 teams are optimistic today.”

On if he knew much about QB Josh McCown before the team signed him: “I did not.”
