Browns rookie minicamp: Here's what coach Mike Pettine is saying about the team

By Nate Ulrich Published: May 9, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine met with reporters Saturday following the second practice of rookie minicamp. Below is a transcript from the news conference provided by the team.

On WR Vince Mayle having a broken thumb and if that’s going to be an issue: “We’re going to address it after this camp. It should not be an issue in the fall. We wanted him to come out, just see how it was, test it. Found out real quick yesterday that there’s still some lingering pain there. So, we’re going to go ahead and get it corrected.”

On if Mayle had surgery on his thumb: “I don’t know exactly what he did to treat it, whether they thought it could heal without surgery. I know it bothered him some at the Combine. Like I said, we were going to just let him come out here and see how it was, and if he experienced any discomfort, then we would just go ahead and let him get through the camp, not throw to him. Then, let him go ahead and get it fixed right after. We expect him back full for training camp.”

On Mayle wearing a red jersey during practice and if he’s worried about Mayle running around even without trying to catch: “He’s getting surgery on it. Anything he did today, we could more than likely fix it.”

Browns rookie minicamp: Here's what coach Mike Pettine is saying about the team

By Nate Ulrich Published: May 8, 2015

Browns coach Mike Pettine met with reporters Friday following the first practice of rookie minicamp. Below is a transcript from the news conference provided by the team.

On if he’s memorized all of the tryout players’ names: “I’ve got my trusty laminated card that’s helped me. It doesn’t help with the double numbers (laughter).”

On what he does when he’s around so many new players: “It’s a win-win. We give guys an opportunity to come out here that maybe fell through the cracks with a lot of the tryout guys and it allows us to do 11-on-11 work. Like we found last year, we found three guys that made the 53 in this. It’s just great to be able to get these guys on film and get them evaluated.”

On what it’s like seeing the drafted players on the field at the Browns’ facility for the first time and if there is anything he’s looking for in particular: “No because we know things are always a little bit slow in the beginning. They’re kind of slowed down trying to process. We don’t get too wrapped up into it, but I think with pretty much every guy that we drafted, at some point during today's practice, there was a moment of, ‘Oh, that’s why we drafted him.’”
