Cavs blasted again, 113-94, on night shooting and defense fail them

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 1, 2016

CLEVELAND: The complacency Tyronn Lue railed against this week apparently wasn’t cured with one embarrassing road loss or one public example made out of J.R. Smith’s antics.

Identifying the problem and fixing it are two different issues. Two blowouts in three nights proves the Cavs still have work to do.

LeBron James scored 16 points, but the Cavs were drilled at home Thursday by the Los Angeles Clippers 113-94 on a night their shooting and defense again failed them. It was the most lopsided loss of the season and marked their largest deficit of the season (27) -- surpassing figures set in their game 48 hours earlier against the Bucks.

A jumper from Tristan Thompson pulled the Cavs within 47-45 with two minutes left in the first half, but the Clippers outscored the Cavs by 14 over the final two minutes of the first half and the first two minutes of the third quarter.

Mike Dunleavy out vs. Clippers, placed into league's concussion protocol

By Jason Lloyd Published: December 1, 2016

CLEVELAND: Mike Dunleavy has been placed into the league’s concussion protocol and will not play Thursday when the Cavs host the Milwaukee Bucks.

Dunleavy was struck in the head during Tuesday’s loss at Milwaukee, but symptoms did not present until Thursday. The team is hopeful he can still travel on the team’s flight to Chicago after the game, meaning there remains a chance he could be cleared in time to play Friday against the Bulls.

Tyronn Lue calls J.R. Smith's behavior 'embarrassing,' Smith was trying not to be boring

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 30, 2016

INDEPENDENCE: J.R. Smith addressed his mental lapse Tuesday night and his postgame response to it with Cavs coach Tyronn Lue, who called it an “embarrassing moment” and said Smith did not handle it the right way.

Smith blundered mentally in the second quarter of Tuesday’s blowout loss at the Milwaukee Bucks when he ran off the court to hug Jason Terry during the game. He was supposed to be guarding Tony Snell, who instead enjoyed an easy dunk while Smith’s Cavs teammates looked on bewildered.

Cavs starters yanked for lethargic effort, get blasted by Bucks 118-101

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 29, 2016

MILWAUKEE: With 3:49 left in the third quarter and the Cavs down 11, Cavs coach Tyronn Lue had seen enough. Enough of the uncontested drives through the middle of the defense, enough of the highlight-reel dunks and enough of J.R. being J.R.

Lue yanked all of his regulars and went with a hockey line change of little-used reserves late in the third quarter, including Chris Andersen, Jordan McRae and James Jones, signaling the end of the Cavs’ winning streak in their lethargic 118-101 loss at the last-place Milwaukee Bucks.

The long and athletic Bucks shot 57 percent in the first half and pummeled the Cavs at the rim. Fourteen of their first 16 points in the second quarter were scored in the lane and they ended the night with 68 points in the paint, compared to just 32 for the Cavs. Budding star Giannis Antetokounmpo matched his career-high with 34 points on a night the Bucks dominated.

Dellavedova adjusting to drastic life changes since signing with Bucks

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 29, 2016

MILWAUKEE: He’s still playing in a cold weather, Midwestern city on the lake in the Central Division, but Matthew Dellavedova’s life has changed drastically over the last five months. He’s a starting point guard now, he’s engaged and he’s financially secure after signing a staggering four-year, $38 million deal last summer with the Milwaukee Bucks.

“What is it? The most stressful things are a city change, a job change and an engagement,” Dellavedova said with a laugh Tuesday morning. “I’m only joking. It’s been really good.”

He will face his old team Tuesday night and square off against Kyrie Irving for the first time as an opponent. The practice battles between Dellavedova and Irving often turned heated, particularly early in their careers, because Dellavedova only knows one gear. It’s a big reason why he earned such a whopping contract in free agency despite serving as a reserve his first three years in the NBA.

Kevin Love wins Player of the Week in Eastern Conference

By Jason Lloyd Published: November 28, 2016

MILWAUKEE: Kevin Love was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week after averaging 30.7 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He shot 55 percent from the floor, including 66 percent (19 of 29) from 3-point range and he went 21-21 from the free-throw line while the Cavs went 3-0.

Love's week was highlighted by his 34-point first quarter against the Portland Trail Blazers, which stands as the second-most points scored by a player in one quarter in NBA history.

Love led the conference in points, 3-pointe3rs made, free throws, free-thrw percentage, 3-point percentage and plus/minus (plus-68). He tied for 10th in rebounding. He joins New Orleans’ Anthony Davis as the only two players averaging at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. Love’s honor means the Cavs have taken three of the first five weekly awards in the East after LeBron James won the first two. Golden State’s Kevin Durant won the award in the West for last week.
