Cavs GM David Griffin expects Tristan Thompson to be in camp Friday

By Jason Lloyd Published: October 1, 2015

INDEPENDENCE: Cavs general manager David Griffin said he expects Tristan Thompson to be on the practice floor Friday, although he declined to speculate under what type of contract.

Thompson is facing an 11:59 p.m. deadline Thursday night to accept the Cavs’ qualifying offer worth about $7 million or reject it and continue negotiations, at which point he would be considered a holdout. The team had the right to extend the Oct. 1 deadline for Thompson to sign the qualifying offer, but declined to do so.

“We fully expect (Friday) he’ll be here in some form or fashion and we’re excited to get going,” Griffin told NBA TV during a live broadcast of Thursday’s Cavs practice. “We’re hopeful that he wants to move forward with his teammates in the same way we want to have Tristan here. If we can come to some agreement we will.”

Iman Shumpert needs wrist surgery, expected to miss at least 3 months

By Jason Lloyd Published: September 29, 2015

INDEPENDENCE: Iman Shumpert needs surgery to repair a right wrist injury and is expected to miss 12 to 14 weeks, the Cavs announced on Tuesday.

Shumpert injured the wrist last week when he hit it on the rim while training, Cavs General Manager David Griffin said. Shumpert informed the Cavs of the issue during Monday’s media day and he went for an MRI, which revealed a ruptured Extensor Carpi Ulnaris sheath in the wrist. He fought shoulder and groin injuries last season and has been plagued with injuries throughout his career.

Shumpert is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday. The Cavs opened training camp Tuesday, but now J.R. Smith is likely the starting shooting guard. Shumpert is projected to return in December.

LeBron James 'optimistic' Cavs, Tristan Thompson will agree on long-term deal

By Jason Lloyd Published: September 28, 2015

INDEPENDENCE: For those looking for a glimmer of hope regarding Tristan Thompson's contract stalemate, perhaps LeBron James provided it Monday.

“I’m very optimistic something will get done on both sides long term,” said James, who is calculated and measured with everything he says. James, of course, shares an agent with Thompson in Rich Paul.

“I love Tristan, I think we all love Tristan, we know what he’s capable of doing for our team and he’s a huge piece to the puzzle, to our success,” James said. “Not having him here today, not having him here possibly tomorrow or however long it is, it’s going to be a missing piece. But I believe that the organization and Tristan, they’re going to get something done because we all know how important he is to our success.”
