LeBron James pressures Cavs regarding J.R. Smith: 'J.R. did his part'

By Jason Lloyd Published: September 30, 2016

INDEPENDENCE: LeBron James applied pressure to the Cavaliers Friday to strike a deal with free agent guard J.R. Smith. James insisted he has stayed out of negotiations to this point, but seemed to make it clear he sides with Smith.

“Negotiations are always two sides, but J.R. did his part,” James said. “He showed up every day. Worked his ass off every day. Became a two-way player, a model citizen in Cleveland and he’s a fan favorite. Obviously we all know that. … He’s a big piece of our team and they just need to get it done.”

Smith shares an agent, Rich Paul, with both James and Tristan Thompson. This marks the second contract dispute in as many seasons involving a Paul client after Thompson was a holdout for all of preseason last year. Thompson was a restricted free agent, meaning he was bound to return to the Cavs at some point. Smith is an unrestricted free agent and available to sign with another team. To this point, he has remained close to Cleveland during the dispute, even taking in a few Indians games.

Tyronn Lue leaves open possibility for Kevin Garnett to join Cavs coaching staff

By Jason Lloyd Published: September 29, 2016

INDEPENDENCE: Doc Rivers always told Tyronn Lue he would save a spot on his coaching staff in case Lue ever wanted to coach after retirement. Now Lue is doing the same for future Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett.

Lue acknowledged Thursday he has discussed the possibility of Garnett joining the Cavs’ coaching staff in some capacity, although Garnett remains undecided on his future.

“I talked to him about it. I know his wife is pushing for it a lot,” Lue said. “Brandi is pushing for it, trying to get him to come and coach. He says he’s not ready yet. He goes back, ‘I might do it,’ but he’s back and forth. We’ll see. But I’d definitely make a spot for him if he wanted to come back and coach.”

Mo Williams reverses course, informs Cavs he will retire

By Jason Lloyd Published: September 26, 2016

INDEPENDENCE: Mo Williams will not play for the Cavaliers this season and has essentially retired. Williams’ agent, Raymond Brothers, called Cavs general manager David Griffin before the team held its media day Monday to inform him of the decision.

Williams has considered retirement as far back as January, but insisted to the Beacon Journal last winter he was opting out of his contract at the end of last season and becoming a free agent again to take advantage of the salary cap spike. Then he picked up his player option and wrote on Twitter last week he was coming back for one more year. Apparently, however, he changed his mind yet again. He did not join the Cavs for their workouts last week in California and he did not attend Monday’s event.

“It was in debate what Mo was going to choose to do,” Griffin said. “He vacillated a little bit so we were planning on this eventuality throughout. We feel very comfortable about where we are at the point guard position.”

Former Kent guard Nate Reinking to be named Charge head coach

By Jason Lloyd Published: September 20, 2016

Former Kent State guard Nate Reinking will be named the new head coach of the Canton Charge, the Cavs' Development League affiliate, a league source told the Beacon Journal. Reinking, 42, left Kent as the seventh-leading scorer in school history in 1996 before playing overseas for nearly two decades.

Reinking earned British citizenship during his playing days and played for Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympics. He has been an assistant with the Charge since 2013 and takes over for Jordi Fernandez, who recently left to join the Denver Nuggets’ coaching staff. Fernandez leaves as the winningest coach in Charge history following consecutive conference championship appearances.

Sources: Former coach David Blatt will get championship ring from Cavs

By Jason Lloyd Published: September 15, 2016

David Blatt is getting one more parting gift from the Cavaliers: a championship ring.

Blatt was fired at the midpoint of the Cavs’ championship season, but the team has ordered a ring for him, too, multiple sources confirmed to the Beacon Journal. He is now the head coach of Darüsşafaka Doğuş in Turkey.

Blatt went 83-40 in parts of two seasons with the Cavs and guided them to the NBA Finals in 2015, where they lost to the Golden State Warriors in six games. He was replaced by Tyronn Lue after going 30-11 last season. Under Lue, the Cavs became the first team in NBA Finals history to erase a 3-1 deficit and win the championship.
